Public Lecture MCIO & MLTI, “e-Systems and Technologies KTP”

public lecture in the Multimedia Room of Labtek VI, organized by STEI and the Information Technology Study Program for CIO (Chief Information Officer) and LTI (Information Technology Services) master's program students, took place on Monday, November 14, 2011, with the theme of the e-KTP System and Technology, which will be implemented in Indonesia starting next year. Present as speakers at the public lecture were: Direktur PTIK BPPT, Dr. Ir. Hamam RizaHe explained several things about e-KTP, including: what is e-KTP, what is the method of collecting it, and the e-KTP network architecture and e-KTP security system.

What is e-KTP?
The e-KTP, or Electronic KTP, is a population document that incorporates a security/control system, both administratively and through information technology, based on a national population database. Residents are only permitted to have one KTP containing a Population Identification Number (NIK). The NIK serves as a single identity card for each resident and is valid for life. This number will serve as the basis for issuing passports, driver's licenses (SIM), Taxpayer Identification Numbers (NPWP), insurance policies, land certificates, and other identity documents.

What method is used for e-KTP?
The method used is biometric capture, which is system verification and validation through recognizing physical characteristics or human behavior. The e-KTP uses fingerprints. This method was chosen for several reasons. Besides its lower cost compared to other biometric methods, it is also unique because no two individuals can be identical, even twins.

e-KTP architecture and security
The e-KTP structure consists of nine layers, which will increase security compared to conventional KTPs. The chip is embedded between the white and transparent plastic on the top two layers (seen from the front). This chip has an antenna inside that will emit waves when swiped. These waves are recognized by the e-KTP detector, allowing it to determine whether the KTP is in the hands of the right person. Creating an e-KTP with nine layers involves several stages, including:
1. Hole punching, which is making a hole in the card as a place to put the chip.
2. Pick and pressure, which is placing the chip on the card
3. Implanter, which is the installation of the antenna (a circular pattern that repeats like a spiral)
4. Printing, namely card printing
5. Spot welding, which is pressing the card with an electric current
6. Laminating, which is covering the card with protective plastic.

The e-KTP is protected with printing security such as relief text, microtext, filter image, invisible ink and colors that fluoresce under ultraviolet light as well as anti-copy design.
