The story behind STEI ITB's victory in Gemastik 4 – 2011

The story behind STEI ITB's victory in Gemastik 4 – 2011

At Gemastik 4, held at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITB), ITB sent 48 students in 17 teams across several categories. By the grace of God Almighty, ITB was able to bring home two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. Although we didn't win the overall championship, we are grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate our standing as one of the best technology institutes in Indonesia.

The competition system for Gemastik is quite lengthy. It began with online registration in June-July 2011, followed by an online selection process from August-October 2011. Selection can involve submitting data or documents online to the committee, or participating in a question-and-answer quiz or online game. After the selection process was completed, a number of semifinalists were selected and will depart for Surabaya on October 11-13, 2011, to undergo the next stage of the process.

Upon arrival in Surabaya, participants had several tasks to complete, each of which varied depending on the category. For the data mining category, for example, they had to present to a panel of judges. For the business game category, they had to play online in a designated room to be selected as the top five finalists. Afterward, they presented their work. For the network security and programming categories, the selection process involved being given a problem and having to solve it using programming code. For the other competitions, the focus was on showcasing their ideas in a poster and presenting it to the panel of judges.

Profiles of the medal winners

Dongskar Pedongi Team (programming competition category). They won a gold medal in that category. The team was represented by Christianto Handojo (13510003), Irvan Jahja (13509099), and Gregorius Ronny Kaluge (13508019). They defeated other teams by answering seven programming problems. None of the other teams managed to solve all seven problems.
The second team to win gold was DNS team consisting of Samuel (13509087), Akhiles Leonardus Danny Sindra (13509063), and Nuansa Lembayung (18209028). This business game competition is a new category in Gemastik. Essentially, in this game, participants must pay attention to business strategy. They are required to produce goods ordered by customers, paying attention to their components. The goal is to prevent product failure due to insufficient or even missing components.
In the business games category, ITB also won a bronze medal through the Garudayasha team. This team was represented by Lyco Adhy Purwoko (13508027), Eric Cahya Lesmana (13508097), and Gagarin Adhitama (13508089).

In the network security category, ITB won a silver medal. This medal was won by Hexley team Chandra Satriana (18108049), Jason Widagdo (18108042), and Lukman Fikri (18108037) were the participants. In this network security competition, they had to "secure" a website that the committee had designed to contain exploitable vulnerabilities. They had to fix the web server with programming codes to make it impenetrable. Then, on the second day, they were required to present how they secured the network.

GCD Aid Team The team, consisting of Mukhammad Ifanto (13508110), Nur Adi Susliawan DC (13508081), and Danang Tri Massandy (13508051), won a bronze medal in the data mining category. In this category, they used special algorithms to process data sets (training data). They used artificial intelligence algorithms to conduct weighted voting. This weighted voting depends on the algorithm used. Therefore, determining whether a problem is suitable for solving with that algorithm or not is done by calculating the weight of each algorithm.

In the game development category, Mendoan team successfully won a silver medal. The team members were Gharta Hadisa Halim (18209013), Raihan Budiwaskito (18209003), and Muhammad Ridhwan Ramdani (18209019). In this category, they were required to create a game or game that is educational and has knowledge. This team created a simulation game for learning to drive a vehicle (car). Equipped with three-dimensional images, all controls are made to resemble real life. There is a clutch, gear shift, gas and brake pedals, and a steering wheel that is viewed from the perspective of when we drive a real vehicle. There is artificial intelligence in our driving environment. So, in the simulation there are other cars passing by so that we can practice our driving skills.

The final medal won was in the written work category. This was an individual work. ITB, with the sole representative, Yudha Wastu Prawira (13509002) won a bronze medal. Yudha successfully wrote a paper on how to develop ICT in Indonesia. He passed the selection process and advanced to the final round. In the final round, he had to create a poster and present his paper to a panel of judges.

Despite failing to win the overall championship, we should still be proud that our nation's children still care about the progress of their nation by expressing their ideas and thoughts in national competitions. And next year, Gemastik 5 will be held in Bandung, hosted by ITB. (Niki)
