Honeywell Launches First World-Class Control Lab At Indonesia’s Bandung Institute Of Technology (ITB) To Empower Engineers With IIoT Technologies

There is a buzz of excitement at the ITB Campus with the arrival of the new Honeywell Controls lab. Hundreds of students and professors arrived at the university to see the latest in controls technologies utilized by refining, processing and manufacturing industries, which will inspire engineering students to take one giant step into the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

On December 1, the opening ceremony for the “Honeywell Controls Lab” was held at the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) of ITB, Bandung, Indonesia. This lab was made possible by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, which can make a real and lasting impact in five areas of critical importance: science and math education, family safety and security, housing and shelter, habitat and conservation, and humanitarian relief.

Alex Pollack, President of Honeywell Indonesia; Prof. Dr. Ir. Kadarsah Suryadi, Rector of ITB; and Dr. Ir. Jaka Sembiring, M.Eng, Dean of STEI ITB attended the ceremony. Other Honeywell executives, including Kerry Kennedy, Director of Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS); Lydia Lu, Vice President of Asia HGR Communications; and George Buchan, SEA Regional Sales Leader Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS), were also present at the event, along with more than 100 participants representing other universities’ officials, ITB partners, ITB students and professors, and national media.

“We are grateful for Honeywell’s commitment in supporting the quality improvement of our curriculum and teaching facilities,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Kadarsah Suryadi, Rector of ITB. “The lab will help ensure our students get the state-of-the-art technical education they need to join the workforce after graduation, especially in this era when the nation is determined to upgrade Indonesia’s manufacturing competitiveness.”

“Thank you Honeywell. Starting today, we can use this lab to learn real life industrial processes, by using the latest practices and know-how in controls systems and IIoT technologies and solutions. This lab not only helps improve our technical skills and knowledge, but also increases our confidence to compete with other engineers around the world,” said Fabiola Maria, one of ITB’s students that will benefit from the new control lab.

“Due to the growing demand for energy in Indonesia, there is an increasing need for technically proficient, ready-to-work engineers across the technology sector. This new controls lab is equipped with Honeywell’s latest technologies that blend the software capabilities with domain expertise, that will serve ITB well for many years to come, “said Alex J. Pollack, President of Honeywell Indonesia. “With ITB’s position as a leading educational institute, we believe this partnership will help students be better prepared to tackle the challenges brought by Indonesia’s developing industrials, especially contributing to the Oil & Gas sector to allow a safer, more productive and efficient operating environment,” added Pollack.

Complementing ITB’s curriculum, this New Connected Lab facility is equipped with a Distillation Unit Pilot Plant, designed as a miniature refining unit, which can demonstrate various techniques of control systems used to purify crude oil, biodiesel, petroleum, chemicals, solvent, and other materials. The Integrated Control System included, can be used to teach Plant Operations, Tuning, Troubleshooting, Modelling and Testing, Advanced Process Control, and Asset Management. Utilizing this new lab, professors will be able to teach students the latest practices and know-how in controls systems and IIoT technologies. ITB will also use this facility for research, other engineering courses, and training professors from other universities and corporations such as Pertamina, and other Indonesian companies.
