The Global Innovation Exchange (GIX) Innovation Competition 2018 is an annual technology innovation competition organized by Tsinghua University and the University of Washington. The competition began in 2016 and is currently in its third year. This year, the finals were held in Beijing, China, on August 26, 2018. Twenty finalists were selected from hundreds of teams through a series of online selection processes. The Indonesian team, represented by students from STEI ITB, was selected as one of the finalists to travel to Beijing to present their work in person to the jury.
To reach the final round, the teams had to go through a series of online selection processes. The first stage involved submitting a product description for the competition. Teams that successfully passed the first stage were then invited to conduct an online presentation session before a panel of judges. Teams that passed the second stage were invited to the final round to present in person to the judges and showcase their work at an exhibition provided by the organizers.
The work brought by the team from STEI ITB is a driver condition detection device using brain sensors. This device will capture brain signals from the driver while driving and then determine whether the driver is ready to drive to avoid traffic accidents due to human error. This work received praise from both the jury and professionals from various fields who also attended the event. Some even offered collaboration for the development of the device and invited the team to attend other international innovation events. Through this competition, it is hoped that innovations will be created that can spread benefits to the world.
