Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are the result of human creativity, and are recognized and appreciated. To this end, the United States Embassy, in collaboration with the Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia (GEPI), Microsoft, and Intel, is sponsoring the IP APP Challenge Indonesia competition.

This competition challenged Indonesian software developers to develop mobile applications that protect intellectual property rights in Indonesia. The event was held on November 29, 2012, at the high-tech cultural center @america.

The competition initially attracted 40 participants or teams. After a screening process, only six teams qualified to be selected as winners. There were two categories of competition participants: professional and student. In the professional category, participants demonstrated applications to combat piracy, while in the student category, participants developed businesses that also educated their players about intellectual property rights. The finalists consisted of teams named KW Team, Detective ORI-ITB, and Bojonegoro United team (Edwin Lunando, Georgius Rinaldo Winata, Samuel Enrico Wijaya, Unggul Bhakti Muhammad) from the student category. Teams from the professional category include IP Team, Morebe, and OGV.

Participants must meet the competition assessment, starting from the possibility of reaching the Indonesian public (usefulness), impact on intellectual awareness and education, impact on intellectual property enforcement and protection, uniqueness, function and design. The judges who provide the assessment are competent judges, namely, Firstman Marpaung from Intel, Rokimas Putra Soeharyo representing Touchteen, Rama Mamuaya from Daily Social, Heriyadi Janwar from Microsoft, James Carouso as a representative of the US Embassy in Indonesia and Shinta Kamdani from GEPI.

Winners will receive a USD 5,000 grant to develop and market their apps in Indonesia. The hope is that these apps will spread the message that protecting intellectual property rights is crucial to the livelihoods of app developers and entrepreneurs, as well as to the development of Indonesia's creative economy.

After conducting the assessment, the jury finally determined the winners for the two categories, namely Bojonegoro United for the student category, with the game title "Startup Story", and the professional category is OGV, with the application "Battle of the Bands".
