The Electrical Power Engineering Study Program of STEI visited the GITET500kV and the Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA).

Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id – On May 12, 2023, Students Electrical Power Engineering STEI ITB  undertook an engaging field trip to learn about power system protection. The course provided students with the opportunity to gain practical experience by visiting two nearby locations related to power system protection: the 500 kV Cirata GITET owned by the Karawang Power Industry Unit (UIT) and the Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) managed by PLN Nusantara Power.

The primary objective of this field trip was to introduce students to the concepts of overvoltage and overcurrent protection used in GITET and hydroelectric power plants. During operation, power systems require protection to avoid disruptions and damage that could negatively impact the electrical flow and system components. Therefore, an understanding of power system protection is crucial for aspiring electrical power engineers.

This visit was accompanied by a team of lecturers for the Power System Protection course, namely Dr. Nanang Hariyanto, Dr. Kevin Marojahan. Bryan Denov, S.T., M.T. In their first visit, STEI ITB students visited the 500 kV Cirata GITET, a project belonging to UIT Karawang. The group was welcomed by the manager of ULTG Purwakarta, Mr. Andhika Rizki Pratama, and his team. The Cirata GITET is a substation that plays a vital role in transmitting electricity from the power plant to consumers in the surrounding area. Students were given an in-depth explanation of the protection equipment used in the GITET, including relays, circuit breakers, and other supporting devices. They were also invited to see firsthand how power system protection is applied in daily operational activities.

After the visit to GITET, the students continued their journey to the Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) managed by PLN Nusantara Power. The group was welcomed by PLN Nusantara Power management and their team, namely Mr. Ochairialdy as senior manager and Mr. Yan Suprayogi as Engineering and Quality Assurance Manager. The Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant is a hydroelectric power plant located in the Cirata area, West Java. Here, students learned firsthand about the electricity generation system from water resources, as well as the importance of power system protection in maintaining the reliability and safety of hydroelectric power plant operations.

During this field trip, STEI ITB students gained valuable insights into the importance of power system protection in maintaining the stability of electrical system operations. They saw firsthand how overvoltage protection and relay protection are used to detect and isolate faults and protect existing equipment and electrical networks. "We were able to combine the knowledge we gained from lectures with practical experience in the field. This helped us better understand the concept of power system protection and how to apply it in the real world," said one of the STEI ITB Electrical Power Engineering students.

This field study is part of STEI ITB's efforts to provide comprehensive education to students. Electrical Power EngineeringIt is hoped that this experience will enhance students' understanding and skills in understanding and designing future power protection systems.

With a better understanding of power system protection through this field visit, it is hoped that students will be able to Electrical Power Engineering STEI ITB ready to face the challenges of the industrial world when they graduate from college.
