Prof. Dr. Ir. Tutun Juhana, S.T., M.T., I.P.U. Highlights Network Performance Engineering as a Pillar of Digital Civilization
Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id — The Forum of Professors of Institut Teknologi Bandung (FGB ITB) held an Open Session for Professorial Scientific Orations on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the West Hall of ITB, Ganesha Campus. The event featured four professors representing various schools and faculties within ITB.
The four professors who delivered scientific orations were Prof. Dr. Ir. Tutun Juhana, S.T., M.T., I.P.U. from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI), Prof. Deddy Priatmodjo Koesrindartoto, Ph.D. from the School of Business and Management (SBM), Prof. Dr. apt. Lucy Dewi Nurhajati Sasongko, M.Si. from the School of Pharmacy (SF), and Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Asep Saepuloh, S.T., M.Eng. from the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology (FITB).
On this occasion, Prof. Tutun delivered a scientific oration entitled “The Silent Orchestration Supporting Digital Civilization.” The oration highlighted the vital role of telecommunications networks as the foundation that enables a wide range of digital services and activities to operate continuously. Behind seamless digital services, online transactions, industrial systems, and communication lies a network infrastructure that operates continuously, despite often remaining unnoticed.

Prof. Tutun explained that telecommunications have evolved far beyond their initial function as a means of communication. The internet, cellular networks, 5G technology, cloud computing, edge computing, and artificial intelligence are now interconnected within an ecosystem supported by telecommunications networks. The presence and quality of these networks influence economic competitiveness, the quality of public services, industrial development, access to education, and the continuity of various societal activities.
However, connectivity alone is not sufficient. Networks must demonstrate stable and reliable performance while remaining capable of adapting to increasing data traffic and changing user requirements. Through network performance engineering, service quality, traffic loads, and resource utilization can be continuously analyzed, planned, and optimized to ensure that digital services operate efficiently.

As networks become increasingly complex, system management is also shifting from reactive approaches toward more adaptive and predictive methods. The use of artificial intelligence can support anomaly detection, disruption forecasting, and resource optimization. Nevertheless, artificial intelligence continues to serve as a tool that strengthens the scientific foundations and engineering capabilities of telecommunications networks.
For Indonesia, an archipelagic country with diverse geographical conditions and digital needs, network quality plays a strategic role in supporting equitable access, digital economic growth, industrial transformation, and the provision of inclusive public services. Through his oration, Prof. Tutun emphasized that maintaining network performance is not merely a technical matter, but also an essential part of strengthening the nation’s digital sovereignty and self-reliance.
The Open Session for Professorial Scientific Orations served as a platform for disseminating the ideas and scholarly contributions of ITB professors in addressing various societal challenges. Through the advancement of knowledge and interdisciplinary innovation, ITB continues to strengthen its role in supporting national progress and sustainable development.
