Muhammad Firmansyah Kasim and Team Representing CERN Summer Student Program 2013

Students from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics successfully became representatives of Indonesia.

CSSP 2013 was attended by approximately 250 students from around the world who were selected by CERN. For the first time, Indonesia will be represented by three students: Muhammad Firmansyah Kasim, from Electrical Engineering, ITB (class of 2009), Imre Nagi, from Electrical Engineering, ITB (class of 2010), and Nathaniel Chandra Harjanto, from Engineering Physics, ITB (class of 2010).

Especially for Indonesian students, selection is carried out with several additional criteria:
The potential for students to continue their studies and pursue fields in experimental particle physics or applied science/technology/engineering related to CERN's mission (accelerators, instrumentation, medical physics, high-performance or grid computing, etc.).
Assessment of basic skills (basic physics, calculus, advanced mathematics, electronics, computer programming) and specific skills in each field of study, based on transcripts from studies and other relevant experience. Knowledge of particle physics is NOT required.
The potential for students to work in international teams as found in experimental collaborations at CERN, by looking at English language skills and organizational activities.
CSSP participants will not only attend relevant lectures but will also be directly involved in various experiments within cutting-edge research projects at CERN. It is likely that one of the Indonesian students will be involved in the CMS collaboration under the guidance of Haryo, who is currently active at CERN.

It is hoped that Indonesia's participation in CSSP will continue, attracting more applicants from across the country. This opportunity is open to students with backgrounds in experimental and applied physics, as well as engineering/technical/informatics. Experimental activities at CERN involve a diverse range of cross-disciplinary expertise and skills.

Participation in the CSSP is part of Indonesia's broader plan to participate in global collaborations like CERN in the near future. This collaboration is not only scientifically significant but also strategically important for opening access to a variety of the latest high-tech technologies developed to meet experimental demands.

Registration for the 2014 CSSP will open around November 2013, and will be announced later.
