Five ITB Students Win the 2017 Hackathon Competition
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Five students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) from team number 6 won the Ericsson Smartnovation Indonesia Hackathon 2017 competition held at the Pullman Hotel, Central Jakarta. The team members, namely Atika Rahmawati (21 years old), Erick Chandra (22 years old), Rahmadi Rizki Pandia (21 years old), Fachriyan Husaini (20 years old), Mahardhika Adjie Kurniya (20 years old), are ITB students from the 2013-2015 class.
This team is focused on solutions to improve public transportation services to reduce congestion in Jakarta. "We hope that with this application, there will no longer be conflict between online and conventional transportation, because each has its own capabilities and the technology to develop," said Atika Rahmawati Putri at the Pullman Hotel in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
The 2017 Hackathon competition was based on Jakarta, the second-worst city in the world for traffic problems. Every day, around 17 million vehicles pass through the capital's streets, 70 percent of which are motorcycles. This means that Jakarta residents spend an average of three hours on the road each day, not to mention during rain and flooding.
Team 6 identified several challenges, including unclear passenger space availability, inconsistent public transportation prices, and driving safety. They then created a mobile application they named the "Smart Passenger-Driver Monitoring System."
They created this mobile app in just 20 hours, while at the Pullman Hotel. The platform, developed as an Android and iOS app, can be used by passengers and public transportation drivers to speed up their travels. It allows passengers to quickly find out the location of available public transportation, and drivers can determine how long it will take to drop off passengers.
At first glance, this app resembles the Grab-Bike or Go-Jek concept. When users open the app and select their preferred vehicle, such as a minibus, they'll be directed to a street map complete with available minibuses.
When clicked, users will receive a price estimate, so they don't need to worry about being overcharged. "This is for public transportation with large passenger numbers, such as metromini, angkot, and metromini. Busway doesn't have this feature, as it has its own corridor," he explained.
The Ericsson Smartnovation Indonesia Hackathon 2017 was held on May 22-23, 2017, at the Pullman Hotel, Jakarta, as part of Ericsson's 110th anniversary in Indonesia and as a commitment to supporting digital transformation in Indonesia. The initiative aims to cultivate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) talent.
In this Hackathon, as many as 60 students from a number of renowned universities in Indonesia such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Telkom University, University of Indonesia (UI) and Bina Nusantara University (Binus), were divided into 12 groups of 5 people, and they were tasked with answering the challenges of Jakarta's traffic jams.
For more than 24 hours they wrestled with ideas, designs, proof of concepts, and working demos based on the Internet of Things (IoT) concept within the scope of Smart City for Indonesia in the future.
In this competition, students are expected to create designs, prove concepts, and demonstrate work with three themes, namely Driver Applications, namely participants are asked to create applications that can be useful for drivers, such as applications to improve driving safety, increase efficiency, or save costs.
Then there's the mashup application, which involves creating applications with internet-connected vehicle capabilities to create innovative services or user experiences. And there's the Smart Transportation application, which aims to improve traffic management, driving safety, or economic efficiency.
The judges for this event were Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Digital Services-Ericsson, Ulf Ewaldsson; President Director of Ericsson Indonesia, Thomas Jul; Andy Wicaksono, Head of IT Development of Jakarta Smart City; and Firmansyah Saftari, Professional Industrial Developer.
Their work will be judged based on innovation, quality, user experience, and potential product impact. Participants will have the opportunity to be considered for an internship at Ericsson Indonesia and participate in Ericsson's higher education program.
