Artificial Intelligence: The Future of the World According to a Lecturer ITB
Artificial Intelligence. For the layperson, this term may still seem unfamiliar, even though its use and application are quite common in society. As with the features Discover Weekly that we can find on the site streaming Spotify music. Similarly, AI is used in travel and navigation apps like Gojek, Grab, or Google Maps.
"The essence of AI is actually how we replicate things that humans can think and do into computers," explained Mr. Utama, who is a lecturer at the ITB School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.
The man whose full name is Nugraha Priya Utama explained that his interest in AI started by accident while studying about... computational intelligence And system science in Japan. An opportunity to conduct research at the Neuroscience Institute in Tokyo made him realize that the human mind is truly complex. Ultimately, he became interested in learning more about how to replicate this capability in computer algorithms.
"Coincidentally, at that time, things that supported this research had begun to develop. It was like if people... surfing "The current had started to rise and was just right. So, we finally continued until now," Mr. Utama recalled.
When asked about the development of AI in the world today, Mr. Utama compared it to a five or seven year old child's abilities. head-to-head with the human brain. However, if we look specifically at certain areas such as visual recognition, strategy setting, fraud detection, and the ability to recognize emotions automatically, AI can be said to be on par with humans.
Can AI Turn Into a Terminator?
As the world of AI continues to develop, is there a possibility that AI could develop into a Terminator-like entity capable of harming humans? When asked about this, Mr. Utama replied that such a possibility could occur in perhaps fifty years. However, he explained that the most important thing is how we prevent it from going that way.
He gave the example of two AI models created by Google that were able to create their own language. However, because the researchers couldn't understand the meaning of the language the robots were creating, they ultimately decided to abandon the project to avoid further risks. From this, we know that AI can indeed develop in any direction. The control remains with humans.
"So, the point is, the control is in our hands. It's up to us to decide how far we want to go. But if you ask me if it's possible, I'm optimistic—it's possible. Will it be harmful to us? Well, hopefully not."
Mr. Utama also explained that the current development of AI is very rapid. However, he emphasized that this rapid development applies to weak AI created to handle specific tasks, such as robots in car factories. None have yet achieved the capabilities of the Terminator.
How Far Has AI Developed in Indonesia?
Apart from being applied to trade (e-marketing), Mr Utama said that many government systems have started to use AI, such as the application of fraud detection on credit cards. Several defense institutions have also begun experimenting with using AI to help filter data, such as finance, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) for pornography detection.
"So if you ask whether there has been progress in Indonesia, of course there has been. But not yet...advanced "China and America. We're heading in that direction. Don't worry. We're strong. We have many great people," Mr. Utama said optimistically.
According to him, one of the current obstacles is the poor management of local data documentation that can...support all research and development activities.
"Compared to ASEAN countries, Singapore is currently number one. However, compared to countries like Cambodia, Brunei, and Myanmar, we're still ahead of them."
