ITB Defends Its Title as the World's Smart Legged Robot
YOGYAKARTA, itb.ac.id – The Aqabah team again won the National Robot Contest in the intelligent legged robot division. With this achievement, the ITB team has become champion for three consecutive years.
In the contest held last Saturday and Sunday at Gajah Mada University, the Aqabah team used a six-legged red robot they called Yaqut. Yaqut had previously won first place in a similar contest at Trinity University in the United States.
“We are always developing Yaqut. From last year, then to the United States, until now, it has always been developed to be better,” explained Aqabah team leader Samratul Fuadi.
Apart from being the champion, Yaqut, created by the Aqabah team, was also named the robot with the best algorithm. Not surprisingly, Yaqut is always quick and agile in carrying out his duties as a fire extinguisher. During the contest, Yaqut only failed to extinguish the fire once.
"At that time, he thought he was in the hallway. Luckily, he still managed to win. We immediately rechecked the sensor," said Fuadi.
Yaqut is a further development of the previous robot, Zarqun. This black, similar-looking robot has been in development since late 2008. Following Zarqun, Yakut was developed with more sophisticated sensors.
“Yaqut is much better. We provide all the best equipment,” explained the Aqabah team supervisor Syawaludin Ramatullah.
Present to witness the contest, Head of the ITB Electrical Engineering Study Program, Yudi S. Gondo KAryono Ph.D., said he was proud of ITB's achievements in the 2011 national robot contest.
"Winning or losing isn't the most important thing. Learning from experience and coming up with new, innovative ideas is what matters most," he said.
