ITB Launches Electric Car at the 17th National Technology Day Commemoration

ITB showcased its electric car creation at the RITech Expo, held Wednesday-Friday (August 8-10, 2012). Held at the Sasana Budaya Ganesha Bandung, the RITech Expo was an exhibition held to commemorate the 17th National Technology Awakening Day (Harteknas). The electric car, nicknamed Jalak, attracted a large crowd and was created by a team of experts from Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD), School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI), as well as Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSRD).
According to Akhmaloka, the electric car's design is ITB's own product, although the car's batteries are still imported from China. Using imported batteries, the car can travel up to 100 kilometers on a single charge. However, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) and the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI) are currently developing their own battery technology that is lighter, smaller, yet capable of traveling long distances to provide the car's energy source.

In carrying out the work, the ITB expert team also collaborated with PT Pindad which provided the location. .Together with PT Pindad, they successfully designed a unique electric car with a single platform that can be developed into 12 variants. These variants range from minivans to minivans. pick up, mobil box, mobil golf, double cabin, up to sedans and small minibuses.

The motorbike, with its main components being a battery and electric motor, is placed in the rear garden. Dr. Agus Purwadi, Coordinator of the ITB Electric Car Manufacturing Team and also Head of the ITB Energy Conversion LaboratoryThe engine used in this electric car is adapted from a VW Beetle. The engine pushes, not pulls. In other car variants, the engine can be placed at the front, like in a sedan, or on each wheel.

This fiber-optic electric car model is a double-cabin car with a capacity of up to six passengers. However, the car is designed specifically knock down so that the luggage compartment can be expanded by removing the rear seats, and converted to a capacity of two or four passengers.

Wawan Gunawan Abdul Kadir, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at ITB, said that the ITB electric car is planned to be developed in 4 variants, namely as a goods transport vehicle, double cabinsix-passenger cars, and jeeps. If mass-produced, electric cars would be priced between Rp 80 million and Rp 150 million, depending on the model.

Currently, electric cars are still under development. The weight of electric cars is planned to be further reduced by using lighter and stronger carbon fiber as the car's casing, replacing metal plates.
