FORTEI 2014: Improving the Quality of Higher Education in Electrical Engineering in Indonesia
In order to harmonize higher education in Electrical Engineering throughout Indonesia, the Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, and Telecommunication Engineering study programs, the School of Electrical Engineering & Informatics (STEI) ITB hosted the 2014 Indonesian Electrical Engineering Higher Education Forum (FORTEI 2014). FORTEI is an annual forum that brings together educators, academics, and researchers related to the field of Electrical Engineering. The event took place on Monday-Wednesday, (02-04/06/14) at the ITB East Campus Center.
The main theme raised in this year's forum is "Improving the Quality of Indonesian Electrical Engineering Higher Education". According to Dr. Arief Syaichu Rohman (Chair of the FORTEI 2014 Event), the main theme was chosen to observe and evaluate the competency of Electrical Engineering higher education graduates related to the issue of global competition and the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI). Therefore, in this forum, matters related to curriculum, international accreditation, were discussed. e-learning in Electrical Engineering education, and others which aim to build national progress and independence.
Several series of events held in FORTEI 2014, namely unifying the FORTEI Household Statutes, the 2014 FORTEI National Conference, the 2014 FORTEI Seminar, and various Workshops. The 2014 FORTEI Seminar is a forum for academic communication for participants. The 2014 FORTEI Seminar is intended as a forum for educators, researchers, academics, and practitioners to present their research results as well as a platform to build or develop collaborative relationships between participants. In addition to the presentation of seminar papers, the 2014 FORTEI committee also invited several keynote speakers in the field of Electrical Engineering.
This year, FORTEI 2014 successfully represented 20 provinces and 76 universities from all over Indonesia. It is hoped that the various activities held in FORTEI 2014 can become a reference for Electrical Engineering study programs throughout Indonesia. "If you look at it, many universities that still lack resources want to have a reference. There are many things we discussed, such as differences in curriculum, accreditation issues, all things related to improving the quality of Electrical Engineering practitioners. The hope is that this event can provide a recommendation for Electrical Engineering itself or other stakeholders and establish good relations among Electrical Engineering groups throughout Indonesia," explained Arief.
A Glance at FORTEI
FORTEI is a communication forum for Indonesian Electrical Engineering Higher Education, for Strata 1 (Bachelor), Strata 2 (Master), Strata 3 (Doctoral) and Diploma 3/Polytechnic (Vocational). Members of this forum are Universities in Indonesia that have Electrical Engineering and Informatics programs/Departments. It is recorded that 122 State and Private Universities have joined. FORTEI was formed in Bali in 2005, initiated by six universities in the field of Electrical Engineering, namely ITB, UI, Undip, ITS, UGM, and Udayana University.
The main activities of FORTEI include: aligning higher education in Electrical Engineering throughout Indonesia covering the fields of education, research and technology applications, discussing national topics related to Electrical Engineering science, concluding, providing input and solutions to the government and stakeholders, as a reference institution regarding higher education in Electrical Engineering, and increasing cooperation and ties between institutions, Head of Department officials, Secretary of Department, and lecturers and researchers in the field of Electrical Engineering.
