Telecommunication Engineering Excursion Class of 2011

Company visits, often referred to as excursions, are one of the learning methods for students to gain firsthand exposure to the world of work, in addition to the internships required by their study programs. The 2011 ITB Telecommunication Engineering Department recently held an excursion in Singapore from January 12–14, 2015. The destinations were the Telkom International (Telin) Data Center and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Thirty-three ITB Telecommunication Engineering students, class of 2011, participated in the excursion.

On the first day, the excursion group arrived at Changi International Airport, Singapore and immediately continued to the Telin Data Center company, located not far from Changi Airport. Telin Data Center Company is a subsidiary of Telkom Indonesia operating in Singapore. This company is engaged in data storage centers and cloud computing. Mr. Sendang, one of the Telin employees who received the excursion group, said that the number of Telin employees is only around 20 people, with 2/3 of them from Indonesia. The company's small number of employees is because the data center system run by this company has indeed used an automation system, so all activities in the company are controlled / controlled by a system. Then we were explained about the technology needed to run a data center and were invited to see the data center directly, but we were not allowed to take pictures of the data center because it is prohibited. Mr. Sendang also explained that Telin Data Center is one of the most well-known data centers in Singapore, this can be seen from the number of customers from the company.

On the second day, the excursion group visited one of Singapore's most prominent universities, Nanyang Technological University. There, we were greeted by Indonesian NTU students (PINTU - Indonesian Students NTU). We were shown around NTU and then taken to SEEE (School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering).

Here the excursion group was received by one of the vice deans of SEEE and then invited to visit 2 research group which is closely related to Telecommunication Engineering. First, we were explained about a device, briefly a small satellite used to capture images of the Earth, more precisely, scanning the Earth's surface to create maps of the Earth. Second, we were explained about the world of satellites in general and also the extent to which NTU Satellite Research has explored satellites. Satellite Research has successfully launched nearly eight satellites into space since the 1990s. After that, the group was explained the process of satellite construction from start to finish until a satellite is ready for launch.

The visit to SEEE NTU concluded the 2011 ITB Telecommunication Engineering excursion series. This series of excursions provided numerous benefits, especially for students, in exploring the industrial world and the education system in Singapore. Furthermore, many new lessons were learned during the excursion. Hopefully, this excursion activity can continue and be supported annually by students, study programs, and ITB in general.
