STEI ITB Lecturer Introduces "Terawang," a Hollow Tree Detection Technology to Support Urban Tree Management

Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id — The School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) ITB brought a technological perspective to tree management through a presentation by Dr. Ir. Akhmadi Surawijaya, S.T., M.Eng., at a mini-workshop organized by the Indonesian Arboriculture Society (MArI) on Saturday (September 12, 2026). During the event, he introduced... Terawang, hollow-tree detection technology that supports the assessment of a tree's internal condition.

Remote sensing has the potential to assist in identifying tree conditions, serving as a basis for maintenance and risk management. This technology is part of the discussion regarding the application of science to support safe and sustainable arboricultural practices.

“Technology development must address real-world needs,” said Akhmadi, as quoted by Jabar Ekspres.

He explained that Terawang was introduced as an approach to detect and examine the interior of trees. Further development is expected to expand its contribution to the advancement of arboriculture in Indonesia.

The workshop brought together academics, practitioners, and aspiring professionals to discuss technological advancements and arboriculture competency standards. The discussion also emphasized the importance of worker, public, and environmental safety in tree management.

The presentation by Akhmadi from STEI ITB highlights the relevance of engineering expertise in addressing environmental management needs. Through *Terawang*, the forum underscores opportunities to leverage technology for tree inspections and more targeted maintenance decision-making.
