Creating a Machine Learning Model, the ITB Student Team Won the UGM Championship

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Informatics Engineering students of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) won 1st and 3rd place in the Data Mining category, as well as Best Pitching in the Apps Innovation category at the Jogja Information Technology Session (JOINTS) 2019, held by the Computer Science Study Program of Gajah Mada University, on April 7 – May 5, 2019.
The competition featured several categories, including Programming Competition Session, Data Mining, Apps Innovation, and Capture the Flag. Approximately 650 teams from universities across the country participated, including three teams from ITB, represented by three teams. These three teams were from the Informatics Engineering Department of the School of Electronics and Informatics Engineering (STEI).
The Head of the ITB Team that Won 1st Place in the Data Mining Category, Christian Wibisono, revealed that in this contest his team was challenged to process and analyze big data so that participants could create a machine learning model to make predictions as accurate as possible according to the available attributes, namely regarding the location, facilities, gender, and price of the boarding house, which were then poured into a paper and presentation.
"My team made predictions for the boarding house market segmentation using a Gradient Boosting Machine. We gained the basic knowledge from the lectures taught in Informatics Engineering at ITB, then participated in similar competitions and, of course, self-taught through the Kaggle platform," he explained.
Additionally, Cornelius Yan, the team leader who won the Best Pitching Apps Innovation award, shared tips on pitching materials that helped his team win the competition in presenting software engineering for mobile, web, and desktop applications. "Our team presented not only the solution but also the business value," he said.
"I hope more ITB students will pursue IT development and achieve more success in this field. Don't forget to practice more and participate diligently in competitions to enrich your data mining and data science experience," he concluded.
