Anechoic Chamber at Radio and Microwave Telecommunications Laboratory STEI-ITB Inaugurated
The inauguration of the radio frequency (RF) anechoic chamber at the Radio and Microwave Telecommunication Laboratory (LTRGM), STEI-ITB, on July 24, 2016, took place lively. In addition to being attended by the funding parties, namely the Electrical Engineering Alumni Association (IAE)-ITB and HUAWEI, the inauguration was also attended by several invited guests such as the Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Partnership of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Riyanto Trilaksono, Deputy of BPPT for TIEM, Dr. Ir. Hammam Riza, M.Sc. and Director of Network & Operations Lintasarta, Mr. Ginandjar.
At LTRGM, an anechoic chamber is used to measure RF electromagnetic waves radiated by an antenna. With the anechoic chamber, the antenna and measuring equipment are isolated from interference and unwanted fields, thus reflecting the true characteristics of the antenna being tested. With an absorber shape that accommodates frequencies up to 40 GHz, in addition to developing education through practicums and student final assignments, the anechoic chamber is also used for the advancement of research at STEI such as 4G and 5G cellular systems, satellite systems, backhaul links and short-range radar.
The anechoic chamber inauguration ceremony opened with remarks from LTRGM representative, Dr. Ir. Ridwan Effendi, MA. Sc., who stated that, in principle, an anechoic chamber is composed of two main components: a Faraday cage (chamber frame) and an absorber. Currently, only the Faraday cage is available for use. Meanwhile, an absorber to complete one side of the chamber is being imported.
The inauguration procession began with the signing of the anechoic chamber handover document by the Dean of STEI, Dr. Ir. Jaka Sembiring and the Chairman of IAE-ITB, Mr. Abdus Somad Arief. Next, the procession continued with the ribbon cutting by the Dean of STEI and the Chairman of IAE, witnessed by Mr. Yousuf Yaoyuya, Telkomsel Account Director from HUAWEI.
The guests' enthusiasm peaked when the anechoic chamber door was opened. Although it was not equipped with an absorber, the guests were very enthusiastic to learn how electromagnetic waves can be trapped inside the anechoic chamber. For the support of the anechoic chamber construction at LTRGM, STEI expressed its highest gratitude and appreciation to IAE-ITB and HUAWEI.
