Vent-I Portable Ventilator Passes Tests and is Ready for Mass Production

ANDUNG, KOMPAS.com – The Vent-I portable ventilator, created by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Padjadjaran University (Unpad) and YPM Salman, was declared to have passed the test on April 21, 2020. The ventilator passed all test criteria in accordance with the SNI IEC 60601-1:204 standard: General Requirements for Basic Safety and Essential Performance and Rapidly Manufactured CPAP Systems, Document CPAP 001, Specification, MHRA, 2020.

"Vent-I has passed a comprehensive product testing process by the Ministry of Health's Health Facility Safety Center (BPFK) and has been declared successful," said Hari Tjahjono, a member of the Public Communications team from Vent-I's developer, in a press release on Thursday (April 22, 2020).

Vent-I is a breathing aid for patients who can still breathe on their own (COVID-19 patients with stage 2 clinical symptoms), not intended for ICU patients. Vent-I is claimed to be easy to use by medical personnel. The device's main function is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). With the passing of this product test, Vent-I is declared safe for use as a non-invasive ventilator to help COVID-19 patients. Hari revealed that this device can be immediately produced for social purposes, where Vent-I will be distributed free of charge to hospitals in need.

"For this social need, Vent-I will be produced in 300-500 units, depending on the amount of donations received by the Salman Charity House. Production is in collaboration with PT DI," he said.

Vent-I will then be used on patients according to medical indications, and its use will be monitored by the Indonesian Association of Anesthesiologists and Intensive Care Physicians (Perdatin) at designated hospitals. "Meanwhile, for commercial purposes involving sales transactions, the distribution permit is currently being processed and is expected to be ready in the next few days," Hari said.

The manufacture of this ventilator was initiated by Dr. Syarif Hidayat, Dosen Teknik Tenaga Listrik ITB.
