Three ITB Students Won First Place in the 2017 Cyber South East Asia Game
BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Not stopping at the national level, three ITB students succeeded in making Indonesia proud by winning first place in the Cyber South East Asia (SEA) Game 2017 held in Bangkok, Thailand on Wednesday (11/22/17). The Indonesian team consisting of Muhamad Visat Sutarno (ITB Informatics Engineering 2013), Aufar Gilbran (ITB Informatics Engineering 2013), Jason Jeremy Iman (ITB Informatics Engineering 2014), and one student from the University of Indonesia (UI) 2012 succeeded in getting the opportunity to advance to the Final stage of the Security Contest (SECCON) Capture The Flag (CTF) world level which will be held in Tokyo, Japan in February 2018.
Awal Mula Perjuangan
Their struggle began when Cyber Jawara Indonesia 2017 kicked off. The competition, held by the Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure/Coordination Center (Id-SIRTII/CC), tested participants on various questions related to network defense and security, hacking, cryptography, system penetration, forensic analysis, and more. Only the winner of Cyber Jawara Indonesia 2017 was awarded the honor of representing Indonesia at the 2017 Cyber SEA Games.
After going through the preliminary round with 172 teams from all over Indonesia participating, only 18 teams were able to advance to the final round. Some of them are winners of national-level inter-campus cyber competitions. On Tuesday to Thursday (26-28/09/17) in Bali, the JAV team consisting of Jason, Aufar, and Visat managed to beat 17 other teams, and ranked first in the Cyber Jawara Indonesia 2017, also having the honor of representing Indonesia at the Southeast Asian level, namely at the Cyber SEA Games 2017.
Not the End of the Struggle
Despite winning the first place title at Cyber Jawara Indonesia 2017, the JAV team is not complacent or giving up. Visat, Aufar, and Jason frequently work on practice questions online and offline together. They also frequently participate in other online and offline competitions as a learning tool and stepping stone. They also hold discussions and plans to prepare their team for the 2017 Cyber SEA Games.
Carving Works
It all started with a personal interest in cyberspace, ultimately leading to a successful work. Jason advises, "Working isn't always about competition or something immediately visible. It can be achieved by pursuing a field we love and working diligently at it until it bears fruit. Don't be afraid to start or give up, because the more we work at it, the more our abilities will slowly but surely improve."
