STEI ITB Conducts Educational Programs in Several Elementary Schools in an Effort to Increase Awareness of Electrical Safety and Energy Saving

Bandung, October 23, 2023 – In the modern era, electricity has become an integral part of our daily lives. Despite its importance, safety and wise energy use are often overlooked. Children, in particular, may lack knowledge of the dangers and risks associated with electricity. Therefore, an initiative has been launched to raise awareness. safety electricity and energy savings to elementary schools in Bandung City.

This program aims to educate elementary school students about the importance of safety electricity, and how they can contribute to energy conservation. This effort is expected to provide the younger generation with a strong foundational understanding for facing a world increasingly intertwined with technology and electricity.

Community Service Team from Electrical Power Engineering Research Group, STEI ITB took the initiative to visit several elementary schools in Bandung City to give presentations. It is important to convey the message safety electricity and energy saving according to the students' level of understanding. Therefore, the material is adjusted to the grade level attended. The first visit on February 23, 2023, at Cendekia Leadership School, was attended by 2nd grade students SD. On the next visit on August 2, 2023, at SDN 189 Neglasari, it was attended by 5th grade students SD. Then on October 5, 2023, a visit was made to SDN 031 Pelesiran, to give a presentation to 4th grade students SD.

In addition to safety, students are also taught about the importance of energy conservation. They are told how even small actions, such as turning off unused lights, can help save energy and the environment. In a world increasingly aware of climate change issues, this understanding is increasingly important.

To make the event more interesting for elementary school children, the initiative team used the method hands-on learning exploration of electrical circuits using kits snap circuitThey provide simple demonstrations of how electrical circuits work and how to build simple circuits that can turn on lights, fans, alarms, produce music, and so on. This provides an opportunity for children to learn in a fun and interactive way, which will hopefully foster their interest in science and technology.

Based on the results of a survey conducted after the implementation of the activity, representatives/homeroom teachers from the three elementary schools visited assessed that the implementation of this community service activity was very good, with students' impressions also very good, especially in the hands-on learning activities. "The activities carried out were good and fun. It was a pleasant experience for the children. When the children made the electrical circuit.”, commented one of the elementary school homeroom teachers.

Through this program, it is hoped that elementary school students will have basic knowledge about safety electricity and energy conservation. They will become agents of change in their families, sharing this knowledge with their parents and siblings. Furthermore, this program can inspire their interest in science and technology, helping to create a more energy- and electrical safety-conscious generation in the future.

This initiative is a positive step in educating and empowering young people to live safer and more sustainable lives. Awareness of safety Electricity and energy saving are important investments in our future.
