Scientific Oration for the 63rd Anniversary: ITB's Involvement in the Second Quantum Revolution

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—The ability to manipulate a quantum unit and utilize entanglement between qubits offers a breath of fresh air in the potential for new technologies in the quantum world. This process, dubbed the second quantum technology revolution, enables calculations capable of solving hard problems in various quantum fields, such as quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing.

This was conveyed by Professor Andriyan Bayu Suksmono, MT, Ph.D., a Professor in the Telecommunication Engineering Expertise Group from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) ITB, during the Scientific Oration for the Open Session of the 63rd Anniversary of the Bandung Institute of Technology, Wednesday (March 2, 2022). The event was held in a hybrid format. The topic presented by Prof. Andri was "Welcoming the Second Quantum Revolution."

At the beginning of his presentation, Prof. Andri stated that currently, there is a group of problems that cannot be solved in a realistic timeframe, namely, so-called hard problems. The complexity of these problems is considered to grow very rapidly, even faster than polynomial functions. Examples of these problems include the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), integer factorization, and quantum simulation.

"Hard problems are those whose complexity grows rapidly beyond that of polynomial functions. In fact, one example of such a problem, the factoring of integers, has been exploited in the encryption of secret messages in widely used cryptographic systems today," he said.
