On the Future of Cyber-crime
The Information Technology Research Group held a public lecture for STEI students. The lecture, delivered by Prof. Pieter Hartel from the University of Twente, was engaging, highlighting the theme "On the Future of Cybercrime." As we know, the internet's rapid growth from 1995 to 2005 has led to significant cybercrime and highlights the importance of information security.
The public lecture held on November 22, 2011, explained the theoretical principles of Crime Science, a basic understanding of Information Security Economics, and the necessary research for cybercrime prevention and security skills. Prof. Pieter explained that there are two ways to handle cybercrime using human elements, namely focusing on the perpetrator and focusing on the offender. Situational crime prevention that focuses on the offender:
- Landasan teoritis
- Action-based research methodology:
– Collection of data on the nature of the problem
– Analisis kondisi situasional
– Systematic study of means of blocking opportunities
– Implementation of the most promising method
– Monitoring of results and dissemination of experience
In addition, to place Information Security in a broader context, several things need to be considered:
- Criminology, because failure to use Information Security properly can lead to cybercrime;
- Economic, because the costs and benefits of Information Security are economic values;
- Law, because the transnational character of the Internet poses serious challenges to the law;
- Psychology, because online life is quite different from real life
