MoU ITB – RIM: Developing the Information, Technology, and Communication Ecosystem in Indonesia

ITB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Research In Motion (RIM) on the development of the RIM Innovation Center on May 22, 2012, in the Multimedia Room of the ITB School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI). This memorandum follows up on the MoU signed last March. The goal of this collaboration is to develop more developers (application developers), especially for BlackBerry applications, in Indonesia.

"RIM wants to develop the information, technology, and communications ecosystem in Indonesia. ITB is a prestigious institution in Indonesia and a good partner for RIM to collaborate on this progressive initiative," said Hastings Singh, Managing Director of RIM South Asia.

Prof. Dr. Akhmaloka, Rector of ITB, said that ITB is very pleased to be able to collaborate with RIM in developing the RIM Innovation Center. RIM and ITB share the same vision for empowering research and training for application developers. "The hope is that it can lead to the creation of new jobs and various businesses in the rapidly growing area of mobile computing," said Akhmaloka.

Under this MoU, RIM and ITB will offer training courses for ITB students to learn how to develop and market mobile applications. This US$5 million investment over five years will also provide scholarships, seminars, and conferences. The RIM Innovation Center is scheduled to open this year. Scholarships will be provided to support students participating in this program.

"This collaboration demonstrates RIM's commitment to Indonesia. We fully support RIM and ITB in this collaboration. We see it as an important milestone in strengthening local infrastructure, creating jobs, and supporting educational programs for students in Indonesia," said Hatta Rajasa, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.
