ITB 1st Place: International Micro Robot Maze Contest in Japan
It may be tiny, but this robot made by students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) won first place at the 2013 International Micro Robot Maze Contest in Japan.
This robot, called Ayam Bot, isn't as fancy as Asimo. It lacks a head, body, arms, or eyes. It does have two legs, called pedals.
However, this pedal was enough to bring the Chicken first place in an international contest in early November. The reason was that he was able to walk quickly and balance on a track measuring 16.42 inches (42 centimeters) long.
"This Chicken Bot walked on the track for 41 seconds. The fastest among the 310 other robots that took part in the International Micro Robot Maze Contest," said Ahmad Fariz (21), one of its creators, on the sidelines of the "STEI Innovation Day 2013" exhibition in the West Hall of the ITB Campus, Thursday (28/11/2013).
Abelio Juniar from ITB's Electrical Engineering Department, Pujianto Wira from ITB's Electrical Engineering Department, and Faiz Febrianto from ITB's Mechanical Engineering Department successfully created the Ayam Bot (Bot Chicken) in two months. The team focused on simplicity rather than design for their robot.
“We just want to keep it as simple as possible, but move as quickly as possible,” he said.
So simple, in fact, that the four young men who make up the Fraganus Team admitted they didn't spend much money to create the Chicken. The capital for this micro robot was only 450,000 rupiah.
"All the items can be purchased here, we also make the drive from a servo motor that can be purchased at a remote control shop," he said.
Not only Ayam Bot, Fariz and his friends also brought the runner-up, Goro Bot. Goro's appearance isn't much different from Ayam Bot. However, it could be said that he's more handsome than Ayam Bot, thanks to his paper-sticky face. However, according to Fariz, he walks slower.
According to Fariz, his micro-robot was named Ayam because its movements resemble those of a chicken. It has two legs but is capable of agile movement.
In addition to the champion chicken, 31 other STEI ITB student projects were also featured in the one-day exhibition. These included a health measuring device for smokers and several educational games. Remarkably, these works have won awards in national and international competitions.
