Guest Lecture: Frequency Dependent Gain Model of the Operational Amplifier
Dr James C. Dennison giving a lecture on “Frequency Dependent Gain Model of Operational Amplifier” on April 15, 2016 in the STEI Meeting Room. The guest lecture was attended by a number of lecturers and a number of students participating in the EL3013 Instrumentation System course in the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program. His teaching approach addresses a pressing issue in engineering education, namely the ever-widening gap between the practical design abilities of engineering students when they graduate and the practical design skills needed by industrial managers to keep their businesses competitive in today’s global market.
In this lecture, Professor Dennison demonstrates that designers must pay attention to the actual specifications of the Op Amps provided by the manufacturers. For example, the gain of the Op Amp (open-loop and closed-loop) is no longer modeled as a constant (as is typically the case in academic design), but as a frequency-dependent device parameter. With this approach, the results obtained at each stage of the engineering design will be approximately the same, in other words, the results obtained from paper analysis, computer simulations, and hardware testing will be very close. The specific performance of the system, when non-ideal Op Amp specifications are taken into account, can then be predicted and obtained. On the other hand, using ideal Op Amp specifications does not always result in predictable system performance.
Jim Dennison has a long background in both industry and academia. Currently, Professor Dennison is leaving his position as Professor of Engineering at McNeese State University (USA) and is in the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program at STEI ITB for the 2015/2016 academic year. Prior to his 20 years of teaching at the university, Professor Dennison was a product design engineer and project manager at IBM for 30 years. In the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program at STEI ITB, Professor Dennison continues to develop teaching materials on practical design using non-ideal Op Amp specifications.
