Guest Lecture Prof. Kyoichi Jim Kijima: Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan

On Thursday, April 17, 2014, the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics held a guest lecture with the theme: "Service Science and Smart Planet" from Prof. Kyoichi Jim Kijima: Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan, located in the Multimedia Room, 2nd Floor, Labtek 8.

The guest lecture was opened by the Head of the Information Technology Research Group, Prof. Dr. Ir. Suhono Harso Supangkat, M.Eng. It was then followed by a public lecture by Prof. Kyoichi Jim Kijima.

Service science is growing rapidly today as the global marketplace has shifted to meet the needs of agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The need for science and engineering is growing, with four key areas: strategy, structure, process, and economics.

Service Science is a new academic discipline, SSME (Service Science, Management, Engineering). The research framework prioritizes Service Science Strategy, development, and execution. Smarter Planet is the harmonization of smart service systems, which must include three communicating components: instrumented, interconnected, and intelligent.

Continuous innovations are driving the growth of the service industry. Even KAIZEN Thinking wasn't quite up to par with innovation in the service sector. This led to the birth of new academic disciplines: Service Science, Management, and Engineering. The skills required for Service Systems Thinking are T-shaped (many disciplines/many systems (deep in one discipline)). Now, more than 100 universities worldwide teach SSME, some of which have earned the title.
