International Collaboration of the School of Electronic Engineering and Informatics (STEI) ITB in Collaborative Research on Renewable Energy to Accelerate the Energy Transition in Indonesia

Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id – In an effort to support the renewable energy transition in Indonesia, the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics ITB through Dr. Arwindra Rizqiawan And Dr. Kevin Marojahan collaborated with international researchers through a research grant from UK-Indonesia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Sciences (UKICIS) through a research project entitled “Green Economy: Roadmap for Accelerating Transition to Renewable Energy through Behavioural Interventions in Indonesia“. UKICIS is a collaborative UK-Indonesia alliance pioneering research and expertise to build global resilience to pandemics, climate emergencies, and natural hazards. UKICIS works to develop and enhance educational, economic, and cultural links through activities that reach out to communities.

Dr. Arwindra Rizqiawan And Dr. Kevin Marojahan collaborate with Dr. Hilya Mudrika Arini, as team leader, and Prof. Budi Hartono, Dr. Yun Prihantina Mulyani, Dhyana Paramita, M.Sc from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), also with Dr. Agnessa Spanellis (University of Edinburgh), Dr. Macarena Beltran (University of Coventry) and Dr. Dhanan Utomo (Heriot-watt University) as international collaborators.

This multidisciplinary, multi-institutional collaboration aims to address the challenges of behavioral barriers to renewable energy adoption, particularly solar energy, which has been shown to have lower-than-expected adoption in Indonesia. By exploring the attitudes and perceptions of potential users and developing policy recommendations to increase renewable energy adoption, this multi-year research project, running from October 2022 to 2025, is expected to provide effective strategies to support the renewable energy transition in Indonesia.

The research focuses on data collection and analysis of user attitudes and perceptions in locations representing urban and peri-urban areas. The results will be used to develop policy recommendations for policymakers and industry players to facilitate wider adoption of renewable energy in Indonesia.

The expected impacts of this collaborative research include an increased understanding of behavioral barriers to renewable energy implementation, the development of strategies to improve implementation among industrial end-users, and ultimately, its influence on energy policy in Indonesia to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the national energy portfolio and accelerate the transition to Net Zero.

This initiative marks an important step in collaborative efforts between Indonesia and the UK to promote the use of renewable energy and address global environmental challenges in line with the spirit of . (SDGs).
