Muhammad Firman, STEI-ITB Alumni: Doctoral Candidate at Oxford at the Age of 23

Behind his simplicity and friendly smile, perhaps no one would have guessed that Firmansyah Kasim (23) is a doctoral candidate in Particle Physics at Oxford University in England.

When met by detikcom at Warkop Bundu on Jalan Rusa, Makassar, on Monday (4/8/2014), the man known as Immang admitted he never imagined he would be able to study abroad. Immang is a recipient of a scholarship from the Indonesian government, through the LPDP (Education Fund Management Institute).

When he was in high school, at Athirah Islamic High School, the youngest son of Kasim and Farida, born on January 26, 1991, won a gold medal at the 38th International Physics Olympiad, July 2007 in Isfahan, Iran and in April 2007 also won a gold medal at the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) in Beijing, China, including several other international awards.

Besides studying in the land of Queen Elizabeth, Immang is the first Indonesian citizen to be active in the Particle Physics Research Institute at the University of Oxford. He is also active as a researcher at CERN (Conseil Europe;ene pour la Recherche Nucle;aire), the world's largest Particle and Nuclear Physics research laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

Immang also studied at Oxford's Particle Physics department with world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. If all goes well, Immang will earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. Phil) degree in Particle Physics in the next two years, a prestigious honor for Oxford University alumni.

Immang hopes that more Indonesian children will follow in his footsteps and study at top universities worldwide. The prerequisite is diligent study and the ability to take advantage of scholarship opportunities to study abroad.

"I hope to be able to dedicate myself to the nation after completing my studies at Oxford and that more and more Indonesian sons and daughters will have the opportunity to obtain a quality education, such as at Oxford," concluded the ITB Electrical Engineering alumnus.
