ITB and Huawei Collaborate to Build Training Center

The ongoing collaboration between the Bandung Institute of Technology and PT Huawei Tech Investment (Huawei Indonesia) is realized in the construction of a training center in Bandung worth 1 million USD.

The training center was inaugurated by Ir. H. Tifatul Sembiring, Minister of Communication and Informatics; Zhang Qiyue, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia; Ahmad Heryawan, Governor of West Java; Prof. Akhmaloka, Rector of ITB; Prof. Suwarno, Dean of STEI ITB; Ma Yue, Vice President of Southern Pacific Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., and Li Wenzhi, CEO of Huawei Indonesia.

The collaboration between ITB and Huawei began in 2009 through scholarships, internships, and sponsorships for ITB students. Through a recent collaborative program, the Student Visit, 40 ITB Telecommunication Engineering students visited Huawei's laboratory in Jakarta to observe the latest Huawei products and technology applications in action.

The development of the STEI ITB-Huawei training center is based on Huawei's commitment to supporting the Indonesian government's initiative to increase data penetration among the public. As of June 2010, the number of data service users in Indonesia was around 45 million.

The government has a blueprint known as the national broadband network to encourage increased data usage, which is largely based on IP technology, which is certainly in line with the trend in the telecommunications industry where ALL IP Based is the main key to the infrastructure network.

To address these challenges, Indonesia must have reliable human resources capable of mastering technology. However, there remains a gap between education and industry needs. Therefore, Huawei, as a leader in telecommunications technology, has taken the initiative to collaborate with Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to prepare human resources with the skills needed to develop IP technology. This training center is equipped with Huawei data communications technology, such as routers, switches, and firewalls.

The construction of the STEI ITB – Huawei training center is part of Huawei's corporate social responsibility (CSR) program which is focused on supporting the education sector.
