Artificial Intelligence Innovation for Urban Mobility Showcased at TMMIN Expertise Exhibition 2026

Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id – Students of the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Bandung Institute of Technology (STEI ITB) participated in the TMMIN Expertise Exhibition 2026 by presenting an innovative AI-based Traffic Intelligence System for Smart City, a system based on artificial intelligence and computer vision to analyze traffic conditions intelligently.

This innovation was developed to address one of the city's major challenges: traffic congestion, particularly in Bandung. This system leverages AI and data analytics to help understand traffic patterns and conditions more accurately, supporting data-driven decision-making.

The STEI ITB students involved in this activity stated that the innovation focuses not only on technological aspects but also on its value to society. They believe that students need to be able to present real solutions relevant to the needs of the city and everyday life.

“The main value we want to convey is that students are able to create real solutions that have an impact on cities and communities,” he said.

Participating in the TMMIN Expertise Exhibition 2026 provides a valuable opportunity for students to apply the knowledge they've learned in college and gain firsthand insights from industry practitioners. This event also provides participants with a platform to understand how innovation is assessed from the perspective of industry, users, and real-world needs.

The exhibition involved various Toyota representatives, including Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), the Board of Directors of Toyota Indonesia, and the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Company Asia, along with a delegation from Japan. Student finalists who had gone through a selection process by the organizing committee also participated in the event.

For STEI ITB students, involvement in this activity is an important moment to demonstrate that Indonesian students have the ability to develop technological solutions, especially in the field of software engineering, which is relevant to the needs of the automotive industry and future mobility.

The preparation process for the activity began in December 2025 with a presentation on vehicle software development. Participants then attended a software engineering boot camp facilitated by TMMIN at the TMMIN Karawang factory. This activity provided participants with knowledge and skills related to software and hardware engineering in the context of the automotive and manufacturing industries.

After attending a series of briefings, participants were given time from February to June 2026 to identify real-world problems, design solutions, and implement ideas based on technology categories determined by TMMIN. The STEI ITB student team developed an innovation in the OUT CAR category, which focuses on technology outside the vehicle.

During the development process, the team went through various stages, from market research and requirements definition to data collection, hardware procurement, software development, and hardware-software integration. This entire process ultimately resulted in a system that could be showcased at the TMMIN Expertise Exhibition 2026, which took place on June 24–25, 2026.

Besides providing a platform to showcase innovation, this activity also provides valuable experience for students in developing both technical and non-technical skills. The system development process, the challenges faced, and interactions with participants and industry practitioners are essential components of the learning experience.

“All the difficulties and successes experienced during the development of the AI-based Traffic Intelligence System for Smart City have become lessons that can be used as provisions for my future life,” he said.

Through this participation, STEI ITB students not only demonstrate their academic and technological capacity, but also demonstrate the important role of higher education in encouraging the birth of innovations that can answer the challenges of society, industry, and future cities.
