The Telecommunications Student Association (ISM) Stimulates Innovation Through the Internet of Things Innovation Challenge

1464341942Internet of Things (IoT) is a clause whose popularity has skyrocketed since 2014. The clause that emerged in the 90s means a system with everyday objects connected to the internet network. Along with the development of technology applications in Indonesia, IoT is increasingly being looked at. Devices connected to the internet are also increasingly diverse. To accommodate the creativity of Indonesian students, the Telecommunications Student Association (IMT) ITB held the IoT Innovation Challenge 2016. In this second edition of the IoT Innovation Challenge, participants were challenged to create innovations under the theme "Future Telecommunication for Smart Society".

The IoT Innovation Challenge is divided into two competitions: an essay competition on IoT for high school students and equivalent, and a project competition using the ESP8266 device. Participants from across Indonesia who submitted their ideas were narrowed down to ten finalists in each category. The ten finalists then presented their work at the culminating event held in the West Hall of ITB on Friday (May 27, 2016). In addition to presenting presentations from the ten finalists in each category, the West Hall of ITB also hosted an Internet of Things seminar.

One such applicative work is SIGAMAci, developed by Alvian and his team, all students of the Indonesian Postal Polytechnic. SIGAMAci is a smart trash can package connected to the internet. A group of trash cans connected to the internet can be monitored, both in terms of location and volume. Once the location and volume are known, employees from the Sanitation Department can collect the trash with an effective route thanks to a route optimization algorithm. "Now Bandung is moving towards becoming a smart city, so SIGAMAci is here to offer a relevant and efficient solution to solve Bandung's waste volume problem," said Alvian.

Smart Society for Indonesia

1464341954Attended by students, pupils, and academics from various universities, the IoT seminar was opened with a presentation by Dr. Ir. Agung Harsoyo M.Sc M.Eng as a delegate from the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information. He revealed the great opportunity for Indonesia to develop IoT to overcome problems that arise every day. "Regarding any technology, the whole world is developing. The whole world of knowledge is not much different. We don't need to feel inferior," said Dr. Agung. In addition, this seminar was also enlivened by insights about telecommunications technology by Dr. Eng. Khairul Anwar, as an Indonesian scientist and telecommunications expert who is active in Japan.

In addition to Doctor Agung and Khairul Anwar, Yehudha Artha was also present to present innovative solutions at Geeknesia. Geeknesia is an innovation platform like Kickstarter, where innovators can get funding from a large number of people. This seminar attracted the attention of various parties, such as Fajri Illahi (Physics 2014). Fajri admitted to being interested in IoT because it is closely related to Instrumentation science in Physics. "Seminars like this make my free time more productive," he said.
