HME ITB Holds Disaster Mitigation Simulation Training

The ITB Electrical Engineering Student Association (HME) held a Disaster Mitigation Simulation Training on Friday, November 23, 2012. Held in the multimedia room of the Benny Subianto Building, the training aimed to educate ITB students on how to implement disaster mitigation measures.

The training included a presentation on disaster mitigation by Jakarta Rescue, a humanitarian organization specializing in disaster mitigation. Jakarta Rescue delivered a presentation titled "Earthquake Mitigation and Emergency Rescue Techniques for the ITB Academic Community." The presentation was delivered by Jakarta Rescue's chairman, Hadianto.

The presentation opened with an introduction to Jakarta Rescue and an explanation of international rescue regulations. The next topic was an explanation of emergency rescue programs in high-rise buildings. This session explained the location of safety points and the estimated direction of building collapse in the event of an earthquake.

On that occasion, the important positions that should be present in every multi-story building during a disaster were also explained. These positions are the "floor captain" who coordinates the people on that floor for evacuation. The "building commander" as the person who understands the building best. And there is also an "accident commander" as the person responsible for overall handling of emergency conditions in the building.

In the next session, Jakarta Rescue also provided a practical simulation to all training participants. This simulation covered self-protection techniques, directing people during evacuation, and how to report post-disaster conditions to the floor captain.

The training's public relations officer, Reynaldi Tanta Paribo (Electrical Power Engineering 2010), said that the disaster mitigation simulation training was held because Indonesia is located in a disaster-prone area. "Therefore, it is very important for the public to know and understand how to deal with disasters," he added.

Reynaldi also hopes that after the training is complete, the participants will be able to share the knowledge they've gained. "This training will be wasted if the participants just keep it to themselves," Reynaldi said.

This Disaster Mitigation Simulation Training is part of HME ITB's major event, Search for Managing the Risk of Disaster (SEMAR). Following today's training, there will be a symposium, an idea competition, and the SEMAR closing ceremony on Saturday (November 24, 2012).
