Two STEI Students Attend the 2016 Jurgen Dormann Education Event in Switzerland

abb1One of the dreams of every student is to receive a scholarship or the opportunity to study abroad. In addition to receiving financial assistance, many scholarship institutions also offer essential soft skills training for students. Two ITB students, Faiz Anhar Widodo (Electrical Engineering 2013) and Dhimas Bintang Kusumawardhana (Electrical Engineering 2013) successfully obtained both through the ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation. From Tuesday to Monday (16-22/08/16), they were selected to represent Indonesia to participate in the Jürgen Dormann Education Event 2016 held in Switzerland. Not only that, Faiz also received the Best Group Presentation award when he had the opportunity to deliver a presentation at the global event.

Drawing Inspiration from Switzerland

abb2The event, which involved representatives from 11 countries around the world, invited participants to introduce their respective countries' cultures, meet with the CEO of ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation, visit the production plant and laboratory owned by ABB Jurgen Dormann Foundation, and go to the Eidgenessische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich, one of the leading technology institutes in Switzerland. In addition, the participants of the Jurgen Dormann Education Event 2016 also had to prepare their group presentations whose members came from representatives of different countries.

Faiz and his team presented on electric cars and battery charging infrastructure, while Bintang's team presented on microgrids. They learned a lot from their seven-day trip to Switzerland. Faiz and Bintang expressed their delight at receiving scholarships from the ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation and the opportunity to be invited to Switzerland.

Perjuangan Terselubung Menuju Swiss

abb3The opportunity to go to Switzerland opened up when they successfully secured a scholarship from the ABB Jurgen Dormann Foundation in 2014. Previously, both Faiz and Bintang had frequently sought scholarships from various institutions. Faiz and Bintang had applied to four other scholarship institutions, all of which were rejected. Bintang herself had even been rejected when applying for a scholarship from the ABB Jurgen Dormann Foundation. At that time, she volunteered to immediately return to Bandung and participate in the scholarship selection process, even though she had only just returned to her hometown in Central Java two days earlier.

Ultimately, Bintang received a second chance to return to the next selection process and emerged as a scholarship recipient alongside Faiz. "We must never give up on achieving anything. Someone once said, dream as high as the sky. Because even if we fall, we will be among the stars," Bintang concluded at the end of the interview.
