This Academic and Research Discussion Series from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics brings the topic of electricity, with speaker Prof. Pekik Argo Dahono.
Currently, more than 50% of Indonesia's electricity comes from coal. Renewable energy contributes only about 13%, primarily from hydroelectric and geothermal power plants. The Indonesian government targets increasing the renewable energy contribution to 23% by 2025 and 31% by 2050. Indonesia is rich in renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal, solar, wind, and biomass. Unfortunately, these energy sources are located far from centers of demand, making them unsuitable for development.
The Indonesian government has built the Palapa Ring Road and the Maritime Toll Road to improve inter-island connectivity. Having an electricity toll road connecting many large islands will allow them to share renewable energy sources. With the electricity toll road, it is hoped that many new energy reservoirs will emerge. Regions can share resources, allowing for a rapid increase in renewable energy contributions.
Prof. Pekik earned his bachelor's degree from ITB, while his master's and doctoral degrees were obtained from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research interests include power electronics, electrical machines, and power quality. Prof. Pekik is registered as a Senior Professional Engineer in Indonesia. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards from the Institution of Engineers Indonesia and the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Association in 2005 and 2006.
