CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research/Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire) is a European research organization tasked with managing the world's largest particle physics laboratory. CERN was founded on September 29, 1954, and is located on the French-Swiss border, northwest of Geneva. Twenty European countries are members of CERN. The particle physics laboratory managed by CERN has a staff of around 4,000 people and receives visits from more than 10,000 scientists and engineers representing 608 universities and research institutions from 113 countries worldwide.

CERN currently operates six particle accelerators and decelerators used to conduct particle physics experiments. One of the most famous accelerators is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC accelerator is located in an underground tunnel 100 meters deep. The LHC tunnel is circular with a diameter of 27 km and stretches along the French-Swiss border. To date, the LHC is the largest and most complex experimental facility ever built. The LHC can produce up to 10 petabytes of experimental data per year, which is then analyzed using a computer network connecting 140 data server centers in 35 countries. Currently, the LHC is used to conduct experiments on the discovery of the Higgs particle, believed to be the initial particle that formed the universe. By using the LHC, scientists can reconstruct the theory of the big bang as the beginning of the formation of the universe.

Since 1962, CERN has held the CERN Summer Student Programme (CSSP) attended by approximately 250 selected students from around the world. The CERN Summer Student Programme provides students with the opportunity to participate in the daily activities of research teams conducting experiments at CERN. Students will be invited to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural work environment that will greatly enhance their experience. In addition, students can also build close relationships with fellow students and scientists from around the world. In 2013, Indonesia sent its best students to represent Indonesia for the first time in the CERN Summer Student Programme 2013.

In 2014, after a very rigorous selection process, two Indonesian students were selected to represent Indonesia in the 2014 CERN Summer Student Programme in Geneva, Switzerland. One of the students was Indonesian representative at the CERN Summer Student Programme 2014 is Bagus Hanindhito who is a sixth semester student of the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Bandung Institute of Technology. STEI ITB provides support in the form of full costs during the program.

The project worked on by Bagus Hanindhito is Low-Level Test of the New Read-Out-Driver (ROD) Module and Back-of-Crate (BOC) Module for ATLAS IBL Data Acquisition System UpgradeOn this project, he assisted the ATLAS collaboration in testing a prototype of the latest data acquisition system that will be installed during the Large Hadron Collider's first long shutdown to prepare and update the experimental infrastructure for higher-energy experiments.
