AI Development for Driving Safety

Artificial intelligence in the automotive world is synonymous with autonomous or self-driving vehicles being developed by a number of companies worldwide. Artificial intelligence is a crucial supporter of driving safety.

Artificial intelligence technology or . (AI) is driving significant progress in the development of the automotive industry. More than simply replacing human drivers, AI is being developed to improve driving safety.

In vehicles, artificial intelligence can be used in simple control systems. In the currently developing electric vehicles, for example, AI is commonly used for battery management systems (battery management system/BMS) and vehicle control unit (vehicle control unit/VCU).

Bambang Riyanto Trilaksono As a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center at STEI ITB, he stated that AI technology can replace routine, repetitive, and relatively simple tasks. This principle can be applied across many fields of work.

"Artificial intelligence can take over low-level jobs that don't require high cognitive skills," Bambang said in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Thursday (March 2, 2023).

In the BMS and VCU, AI systems embedded in semiconductors or chips are crucial components in electric vehicles, in addition to the battery. The systems will help vehicle users access various information, including visualization of battery usage, charging alerts, and battery temperature monitoring. In this regard, Bambang Riyanto Trilaksono  is developing the E-Trike three-wheeled electric vehicle and the E-Bus electric bus together with the National Center for Sustainable Transportation Technology (NCSTT) ITB and PT Allied Harvest Indonesia.

Electric cars are one of the innovations in the motor vehicle industry.

More broadly, AI is now supporting the development of autonomous vehicles. Vehicles can move independently thanks to a control system comprised of various sensors, such as . And sensor fusionThe sensor is capable of capturing images and videos of traffic around the car as a moving reference.

Self-driving vehicles are also equipped with advanced navigation systems that can automatically determine efficient routes to their destinations. All basic steering operations, from accelerator and steering to braking, can be performed systematically and automatically by technology. electronic control unit (ECU).

STEI ITB and PT Allied Harvest Indonesia are collaborating to manufacture chips in Malaysia for electric vehicles to be commercialized in Indonesia.

Based on Bambang's research on self-driving trains, AI in vehicles can be applied in two ways. AI can help drivers be more alert to potential accidents, or completely replace the driver's role with an artificial intelligence control system.

"The idea is that AI can replace drivers who can become tired, sick, distracted, or unable to concentrate properly, which often leads to accidents," said the STEI ITB lecturer.

This technology is already available in Indonesia. Self-driving train models, for example, are available in the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology and the Grade of Automation (GoA) level 3 system on the Greater Jakarta LRT, allowing it to operate without a driver.

"The hope is that by using AI technology, autonomous (self-driving) cars can improve safety," he concluded. Bambang Riyanto Trilaksono.
