Three Informatics Engineering Students Won Second Place in Competitive Programming at Techphoria 2017

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Responding to the challenge to surpass their limits with perseverance, three ITB students, namely Jehian Norman Saviero (Informatics Engineering 2015), Arno Alexander (Informatics Engineering 2015), and Pratamamia Agung (Informatics Engineering 2015), succeeded in winning second place in the Competitive Programming (CP) competition at Technology Euphoria (Techphoria) 2017. The national-scale competition carried the theme “Raising Smart Technology for Modern Era in Indonesia”, and was organized by the Faculty of Computer Science, Sriwijaya University.

Sekilas Mengenai Kompetisi

The Competitive Programming competition they faced had slightly different rules than usual. The CP competition at Techphoria 2017 was relatively fast-paced compared to typical CP competitions, with four computational and logic problems to be solved within two hours. Furthermore, the points system employed was a partial point system, where each correct test case earned a point.
In the first 30 minutes, Jehian, Arno, and Agung still hadn't managed to solve any of the problems they faced. Despite this, they didn't give up and continued to work hard to boost their morale and improve their team ranking. As a result, by the end of the competition, they had soared to second place.

Perjuangan Menaklukkan Diri Sendiri

Of course, this victory wasn't the result of a few days of effort. Jehian, Arno, and Agung regularly took the time to practice independently on online judging sites, as well as study algorithms and data structures in depth. With continued practice, their ability to program under pressure to find a specific solution within a specific timeframe also improved.
Starting from an interest in logic and mathematics, Jehian, Arno, and Agung slowly climbed the ladder of victory, challenging each challenge. Before their current victory, they had already experienced many defeats. Starting from their intention to go to the final Ideafuse 2016 due to lack of funds, to GEMASTIK 9 and Vocompfest 2017 where they did not even make it to the final round. Even so, they believed that their efforts would not be in vain, and finally their hard work paid off with second place in the Competitive Programming competition at Techphoria 2017.

Motivation to Fight

Everyone has their own reasons and motivations to strive for excellence, especially with the support of others. When their work makes others around them happier, that's certainly a motivator in itself. "I may be small and too small for ITB, but I hope my current achievements can motivate others to be better, so they too will be motivated and can motivate others. And so on, so this cycle will never end," said Jehian, representing their team.
