Welcome to homepage of Control and Computer Systems Research Group (CCSRG). We are one of nine research groups in School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). This research group is presently led by Prof. Carmadi Machbub. The group research focuses on control theory, applications and real-time implementation, modeling & simulation, intelligent systems and robotics.

Control and Computer Systems Research Group in ITB was founded in 70’s to address the new area of control and computer systems, which in the mid of 1960s, had received a great deal of attention. Since 1970s, control systems and computer have been taught in 2nd to 4th year of undergraduate program, and 1st – 2nd year of Master program in ITB. CCSRG has also founded Advanced Robotics Research Laboratory. And now CCSRG is home to 10 (ten) faculty members and approximately 30 Master and Doctorate students.

CCSRG is particularly proud of the quality of education, strong research activities and link with industries by providing consultancies, training, prototyping and designing products in the area of control, computer, simulation, mechatronics and robotics. CCSRG is working closely with Robotics Research Laboratory, Control and Computer Systems Laboratory and Center for Unmanned Systems Studies.

1. Mobile Robot : AMIGO

The Omron Adept AmigoBot is a small, durable, general-purpose differential-drive mobile robot platform. The robot runs on ROS (Robot Operating System) standard, can receive motion commands in Matlab, Python, and Java languages, and provide data through a wireless connection (WiFi, IEEE 802.11).

 

 

 

 

 

2. Mobile Robot : PIONEER

Pioneer 3-AT is a small four-wheel, four-motor skid-steer robot ideal for all-terrain operation or laboratory experimentation. The Pioneer 3-AT comes complete with one battery, emergency stop switch, wheel encoders and a microcontroller with ARCOS firmware, as well as Pioneer SDK advanced mobile robotics software development package.

Pioneer research robots are the world’s most popular intelligent mobile robots for education and research. Their versatility, reliability, and durability have made them the preferred platform for advanced intelligent robotics. Pioneers are pre-assembled, customizable and upgradeable, and rugged enough to last through years of laboratory and classroom use.

 

3. Mobile Robot : SEEKUR

Seekur is a large, all-weather robot that can traverse rugged terrain. Its four independently controlled wheels allow the platform omnidirectional steering capability. Seekur can easily be outfitted with heavy payloads supported with power and I/O accessibility. Choose from available accessories or easily mount your own custom instruments.

The base robot comes complete with battery set and charging system, segmented bumper array, emergency stop switches, remote control unit, and a microcontroller with SeekurOS robot control firmware, as well as Pioneer SDK advanced mobile robotics development software.

Adept MobileRobots research robots are one of the world‘s most popular intelligent mobile platforms for education and research. Their versatility, reliability, and durability have made them the preferred platform for advanced intelligent robotics.

 

4. Humanoid Robot : NAO

NAO is a small humanoid robot designed to interact with people. It’s packed with sensors (and character) and it can walk, dance, speak, and recognize faces and objects. Now in its sixth generation, it is used in research, education, and healthcare all over the world.

 

5. Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)

An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is a robot that travels underwater without requiring input from an operator. AUVs constitute part of a larger group of undersea systems known as unmanned underwater vehicles, a classification that includes non-autonomous remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) – controlled and powered from the surface by an operator/pilot via an umbilical or using remote control. In military applications an AUV is more often referred to as an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV). Underwater gliders are a subclass of AUVs.

 

6. Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) – Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is a vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground and without an onboard human presence. UGVs can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible to have a human operator present. Generally, the vehicle will have a set of sensors to observe the environment and will either autonomously make decisions about its behavior or pass the information to a human operator at a different location who will control the vehicle through teleoperation.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without any human pilot, crew, or passengers on board. UAVs are a component of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), which includes adding a ground-based controller and a system of communications with the UAV. The flight of UAVs may operate under remote control by a human operator, as remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), or with various degrees of autonomy, such as autopilot assistance, up to fully autonomous aircraft that have no provision for human intervention.

As control technologies improved and costs fell, UGVs and UAVs usage expanded to many non-military applications. These include forest fire monitoring, aerial photography, product deliveries, agriculture, policing and surveillance, infrastructure inspections, science, smuggling, and drone racing.

 

7. Batch Distillation Column

 

Distillation is a method to separate chemical substances from their solvent. This is possible due to the difference in boiling point and/or vapor pressure between chemical substances. The distillation process itself is conducted in a distillation column. Vapor pressure differences between substance and solvent at a certain temperature will push the vapor-liquid equilibrium, thus the concentration of the substance inside a solvent will change accordingly.

This figure shows a distillation case study as presented in the Control Laboratory STEI-ITB: Batch Distillation Column (by BR Instrument). This is among the simplest distillation process and thus is prevalent among school laboratories. As the control system is a branch of electrical engineering that aims to control a process or plant to aid in producing a specific yield, several control methods/algorithms are applied to this mini-batch distillation column to aid a simple distillation of a mixture that contains a substance and a solvent.

 

8. Process Instrumentation Trainer

There are four main physical quantities that are widely used in various industries: level, flow rate, pressure, and temperature.

The Process Instrumentation Trainer device (by FeedBack Instrument), as available in the Control Laboratory STEI-ITB, is used to facilitate electrical engineering students to learn about control method implementation in a real-life industrial process. As an example, this modular device can be arranged into a high-level control system. Students may apply a simple control method (such as PID) by tuning the PLC Parameter and examining whether the applied control method is able to perform as it intended to (keeping the water level at a certain setpoint value).

 

 

9. Visual Tracking System

The Visual Tracking System is comprised of a pan-tilt platform and a camera, where images are processed using a computer (aided by a Graphical Processing Unit), and the movement action is decided by a control method implemented inside a microcontroller.

Previous works have been done in face detection and tracking, custom object tracker, a combination of face and posture to track humans, and a state-machine-based image processing method combination that could be implemented to track healthcare-related objects. Various deep learning methods and feature extraction are being used for processing the image. Current research focuses on the novel Movement Distance Score that is created to account for object displacement while tracking the target object.
