Prof. Dr. Syarif Hidayat obtained his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1988, then continued his Master of Science (MS) education in the same department in 1991. His doctoral degree (Ph.D.) was obtained in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1996. His main interest is in the field of lightning physics and lightning protection, high voltage electrical equipment, power system instrumentation and protection technology, as well as submarine cable systems and installations.

As a pioneer in his field, he is the founder National Lightning Detection and Mapping System and developer of more than 30 lightning protection devices. He is also a pioneer in national submarine cable installation, a developer of high-voltage equipment, and a developer of Covid-19 Emergency Ventilator. Intellectual Property Rights he has 15 patents and 4 copyrights for his innovative works as well has written more than 30 publications in international journals and conferences.
