Prof. Dr. Syarif Hidayat memperoleh gelar Bachelor of Science (BS) di Departemen Teknik Elektro, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) pada tahun 1988, kemudian melanjutkan pendidikan Master of Science (MS) di departemen yang sama pada tahun 1991. Gelar doktor (Ph.D.) diraih di Departemen Teknik Elektro, University of Tokyo, Jepang, pada tahun 1996. Beliau memiliki minat utama dalam bidang fisika petir dan proteksi petir, peralatan tenaga listrik tegangan tinggi, teknologi instrumentasi dan proteksi sistem tenaga, serta sistem dan instalasi kabel bawah laut.

Sebagai pionir di bidangnya, beliau merupakan pendiri National Lightning Detection and Mapping System dan pengembang lebih dari 30 perangkat proteksi petir. Beliau juga menjadi pelopor instalasi kabel bawah laut nasional, pengembang peralatan tegangan tinggi, serta pengembang Ventilator Darurat Covid-19. Hak Kekayaan Intelektual beliau terdiri dari 15 paten dan 4 hak cipta atas karya-karyanya yang inovatif serta telah menulis lebih dari 30 publikasi di jurnal dan konferensi internasional.
