BANDUNG, itb.ac.id \u2013 Lightning is often considered dangerous and frightening, especially during heavy rain. Its thunderous sound makes anyone who hears it cover their ears. Some people have even reportedly died from being struck by lightning. Despite all this, did we know that lightning actually has many benefits for human life on Earth?<\/p>\n

Lightning occurs due to the jump of electrons from negatively charged clouds to the positively charged earth. ITB Professor, Prof. Dr. Dipl.Ing.Ir. Reynaldo Zoro<\/a> He explained that three conditions must be met for lightning to occur. First, the sun's heat evaporates water; second, the presence of floating particles in the air, usually sea salt or industrial pollutants; and third, the humidity of an area.<\/div>\n

Because it's located on the equator, Indonesia is a country with a high incidence of lightning. He explained that lightning is formed from Comonolimbous clouds. Within these clouds, there are positively (+) and negatively (-) charged particles. The positive particles gather at the top, and the negative particles gather at the bottom. They then rub against each other, and if sufficient energy is generated, it is released in the form of lightning.<\/div>\n

Typically, Prof. Zoro explained, lightning occurs most frequently during the rainy season. This lightning originates from both positive and negative charges. Some originate from cloud to ground, and some from ground to cloud. If the lightning branch points downward, it originates from cloud to ground, while if the opposite occurs, it originates from ground to cloud. \"Most often, it originates from negative charges in the cloud downward (to the ground),\" he explained.<\/div>\n

The Professor in the Electrical Engineering Research Group (KK), School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics ITB said that lightning is actually a friend to life on earth. Many benefits are generated when lightning occurs. \"Actually, lightning should not be feared, lightning produces nitrates carried by rain which are good for plants, lightning also produces ozone to block ultraviolet rays. So lightning is actually a friend of life,\" he said.<\/div>\n

Regarding incidents of people being struck by lightning or electronic devices being damaged, Prof. Zoro said this is due to the public's lack of understanding of lightning. He explained that lightning often strikes taller structures. Therefore, if a skyscraper or house is taller than the others, it needs to be protected by a lightning rod.<\/div>\n

If you're in an open field, such as a rice paddy or soccer field, if you see signs of impending lightning, you should immediately stop your activity and take cover. If you can't, you can bring your legs together and bend down almost parallel to the ground. Leaning against trees also requires caution due to the lightning's vines. \"If you're leaning against a tall tree, there should be a minimum distance of one meter. It could jump toward you,\" he added.<\/div>\n

\"If you are in the rice fields and taking shelter in a hut, you also need to be careful because the hut is the highest structure in the rice fields. Therefore, you need a lightning rod installed on the side of the hut, at a distance of more than 1 meter from the hut,\" he explained.<\/div>\n

He explained that West Java has areas prone to lightning, particularly in Bogor and Majalengka. ITB has contributed to the construction of lightning rods in these areas, such as Kertajati Airport, to ensure air navigation equipment remains functional for aircraft takeoffs. \"ITB has also assisted in the construction of lightning rods, such as at the Pertamina oil refinery in Cilacap, Kertajati Airport, Petrokimia Gresik, and the football field,\" he said.<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
