BANDUNG, LK - Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) had the opportunity to send two delegates to the prestigious CERN (Organisation Europeenne pour la Recherche Nucleaire atau European Organization for Nuclear Research<\/em>) Summer Student Programme 2018, from June to August in Geneva, Switzerland. The two delegates were students, namely Arifin Luthfi Maulana (Engineering Physics 2014) and Joshua (Electrical Engineering 2015).<\/p>\n

CERN is a research center in particle physics and home to the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Selected students are invited to experience working in a multicultural and high-class research atmosphere. Students are presented with a series of lectures by world-renowned professors and scientists, as well as opportunities to work on projects, participate in workshops, facility tours, seminars, and more.<\/p>\n

Indonesia began sending delegations in 2013, when the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) established a partnership with CERN in particle physics. For six consecutive years, Indonesia has been represented in this event by ITB students.<\/p>\n

Arifin said that during the activity, he was involved in testing and studying a series of new detectors, which will be installed in the ATLAS experiment to prepare for the new era of the High Luminosity LHC in 2026. In fact, during his time there, Arifin was asked to calculate the time resolution of one of the newly developed sensors, namely the LGAD sensor with gallium implants as an amplification layer.<\/p>\n

\"The properties of this sensor are still largely unknown, and I'm very fortunate to be one of the first to analyze its performance. Research like this is extremely rare for a summer student to conduct,\" he explained.<\/p>\n

Joshua echoed this sentiment. He stated that while there, he was given the responsibility of designing a program to collect data, monitor, and control the research process on the development prototype.\u00a0cooling system<\/em>\u00a0detektor ATLAS.<\/p>\n

\"I gained so much experience, from both scientific and cultural perspectives. What was particularly interesting was the work ethic of the staff at CERN. They forbade me from working overtime because adequate rest is key to optimal performance. Before joining this program, I had no idea what my capabilities were, but now I feel like I can go anywhere because I'm part of something global,\" he concluded.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
