This state-owned university, located in Busan, South Korea, places a strong emphasis on science and technology research. The university offers free tuition for postgraduate students and provides ample funding for research. Despite being located in Korea's second-largest city, the cost of living is relatively low, making PKNU one of the best options for continuing your studies in Korea.

Next, Prof. Chung explained his research on visible light communication (VLC), a topic that has been much discussed recently. VLC originated from a research collaboration between the Universities of Edinburgh, St Andrews, Strathclyde, Oxford, and Cambridge. VLC utilizes visible light from LED lamps to transmit data at high speeds. Prof. Haas of the University of Edinburgh termed this communication via LEDs as Light-Fidelity (Li-Fi) which has great potential to replace Wi-Fi technology in the future.

Compared to Wi-Fi technology which uses the radio frequency spectrum, VLC technology has 4 advantages, namely in terms of capacity, availability, security, efficiencyThe visible light spectrum is 10,000 times larger than the radio frequency spectrum, making it extremely capacious. LED availability is also very high, given its relatively low price. The light's inability to penetrate walls makes VLC technology safer. Furthermore, LEDs have a high level of efficiency.

As the head of the Mobile Transmission System Lab, Prof. Chung successfully led his team to create a prototype VLC-based communication device. The prototype utilizes a light sensor on a smartphone to receive data transmitted by a configured LED. In the future, Prof. Chung will develop LEDs as Li-Fi, enabling multi-user communication. "In the near future, Li-Fi will replace Wi-Fi as the primary communication technology," Prof. Chung said at the end of his lecture.

This guest lecture was held in collaboration between the Electronics Research Group (KK) of STEI ITB and the Center for Excellence in Broadband Wireless Access Science and Technology (PUI-BWA) of PME ITB. It is hoped that this visit from PKNU will foster research and academic collaboration between STEI ITB and PKNU Korea.

Bertempat di ruang multimedia STEI ITB, Prof. Yen Ho Chung memberikan kuliah tamu dengan tema “Visible Light and Wireless Communication”.
