The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), in collaboration with PT Industri Kereta Api (PT INKA), continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing smart and environmentally friendly transportation through the successful testing and technology audit of a battery-powered autonomous tram in the city of Solo. This achievement marks an important milestone in efforts to integrate modern transportation technology that is safe, efficient, and sustainable in Indonesia.

The testing, conducted over 15 days from 7 to 21 November 2024, produced encouraging results. The autonomous tram was tested in a mixed-traffic environment along Jalan Slamet Riyadi, Solo, operating at an average speed of 3.9–4.5 m/s...

The artificial intelligence (AI)-based system implemented enables the tram to detect various dynamic objects such as cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians, and to predict their movement directions through a range of installed sensors, including cameras, lidar, and radar. When a potential collision is detected, the system autonomously activates the horn and adjusts speed to maintain safety while preserving passenger comfort. In sudden situations—such as other vehicles or pedestrians unexpectedly crossing—the Emergency Braking System (EBS) is automatically activated to ensure the tram stops safely. . .

Another advantage of the system is computational efficiency achieved through a digital map containing the locations of static objects such as warning signs and crossings. With this approach, the perception system can fully focus on dynamic objects on the track, enhancing responsiveness in complex situations. The fully autonomous mode allows the tram to operate without driver intervention, demonstrating stability and strong adaptability to urban traffic dynamics. . .

The technology audit conducted independently by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) further reinforces this achievement. The audit results state that the autonomous tram technology functions well and meets standards equivalent to Vehicle Autonomy Level 3 (conditional driving automation), in accordance with international classifications defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). .. . .

The success of testing and auditing in Solo demonstrates that innovations developed by Indonesian researchers are capable of competing with similar high-technology products at the international level.

Prof. Bambang Riyanto, Head of the ITB Research Team for the project “Development of an Autonomous System Using Artificial Intelligence for Trams,” explained that the developed autonomous system is rich in AI applications designed to improve efficiency, safety, and comfort. “This autonomous system allows the tram to operate in manual mode by a driver, assisted by driver assistance systems, as well as in fully autonomous mode (without a driver) in mixed traffic. To support safety and comfort, the tram is equipped with object detection, collision avoidance assist, driver attention warning, and speed limit assist features in manual mode. Meanwhile, the autonomous mode includes traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and an autonomous emergency braking system. We are optimistic that this technology will become an important foundation for introducing smart, renewable-energy-based public transportation in Indonesia,” said Prof. Bambang. ., ., .. . . ., ., as well as ..

This collaboration between ITB and PT INKA reflects a shared vision to create smart, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions for the future. With funding support from the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP), the development of this autonomous tram not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also opens opportunities for innovation in intelligent transportation technology in Indonesia. ITB and PT INKA hope that the success of this trial will serve as a concrete step toward greener, more modern, and sustainable smart cities.
