This article tells the story of an Electrical Engineering alumni STEI – ITB therefore I added the title from the original article title. The article is divided – into 4 parts telling from the beginning how to become one of the participants of Indonesia Mengajar to the experiences he went through with the children – children in Indong Village. Of course STEI is very proud that there is one of the alumni who can provide his devotion to this nation, hopefully this article can be an inspiration for anyone who reads it. Studying abroad or working for a large company with a high salary probably never crossed the minds of the children of Indong village. Living with limited access to information on a remote island, directly or indirectly, limits their imagination when it comes to choosing their dreams. Adi tries to broaden their horizons by introducing them to an object called an \"encyclopedia.\"<\/p>\n

Adi's students are mostly the children of farmers. In Indong village, they are not familiar with many professions outside those found there, such as farmer, fisherman, midwife, or the one considered the most prestigious: PNS. \"They definitely want to be the same,\" Adi said. Sometimes his students' aspirations don't even refer to a specific profession, for example wanting to own a motorboat or... speed boat<\/em>. Whatever their desires, Adi tries to instill enthusiasm in the minds of each child. He often conveys the message to them, \"If you want to be a doctor or PNS, you have to graduate from SD, SMP, SMA, then go to college. If you want to have speed boat<\/em>\"You have to have money. How do you get money? You have to work. To find a job, you have to graduate from school,\" Adi said.\"\"

Adi realized that the children there still had very limited knowledge about future career choices. It was undeniable that they wanted to be PNS or doctors, not always because they really wanted to, but those were \u201conly\u201d a few professions they knew. From there, Adi also slowly tried to broaden the horizons of the Indong SD children. He often brought an encyclopedia and told his students to read it. Adi continued what he often said to the children, \u201cWhen you grow up, you will see what is in this world. It\u2019s not just being a doctor, soldier, or police officer. There are also jobs like astronauts, scientists, archaeologists, and others.\u201d The encyclopedia and Adi\u2019s explanation began to give rise to questions in the children\u2019s minds. \u201cThey started to think and wonder what they wanted. Finally, now there is a child whose dream is to be an astronaut. And he wrote \u2018Ambition: To Become an Astronaut\u2019. I am so proud,\u201d said Adi happily.<\/p>\n

In addition to broadening his horizons, Adi also continues to strive to strengthen the values \u200b\u200bof tolerance and tolerance between ethnicities and religions to his students. Understandably, this remains a sensitive issue there. If a child from a neighboring village comes, for example, a tense atmosphere often cannot be avoided. Adi understands that this issue cannot be resolved with shortcuts. The tension that arises between children is actually also \"inherited\" from their parents' generation. Adi provides an illustration, \"For example, I say, 'Fikri, a child from the neighboring village, comes to play football. We have to... a. hit him, b. chase him away, c. play football together, d. make fun of him.' Yes, you enggak<\/em> kaget kalau enggak<\/em> there are (children) who are responsible for playing ball together.\"<\/p>\n

Faced with this situation, Adi continued to try to provide his students with the correct understanding. He also took concrete action by inviting children from the neighboring village to play soccer with him. Coincidentally, Adi's fellow young teacher was also on duty in that village. Even after the report cards were received, Adi planned to take his students to a soccer match there. \"So, how do we get closer to the children first?\" Adi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPak Adi jangan pergi\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hearing that Adi was leaving Indong village, the children suddenly gathered in front of his house. Not a single complete sentence came out of their mouths. \"I don't know, they just said 'Mr. Adi... Mr. Adi...' and then left again,\" Adi said. Some time after the incident, Adi accidentally found a letter from the children tucked into his bag. \"It turned out the letter said, 'Mr. Adi, don't go.' 'Mr. Adi, don't be too long, okay?'\" Adi continued. And the morning before he left, there were still several other children who came with their own envelopes and letters. They also wrote messages like: 'Mr. Adi, don't go home,' 'Come back here later, okay?' and 'Don't forget to bring us a souvenir.'<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his experience, Adi believes that the most pressing educational issue that needs to be addressed, especially in remote areas, is the availability of teachers. These so-called unsung heroes are the spearheads of educational advancement in a region. He further revealed that there are actually a large number of teachers there, but most are concentrated in the city. In Indong village, besides the issue of quantity, teacher quality also needs to be improved. \"Therefore, in my opinion, teacher placement (should be) good and they should be truly qualified teachers,\" Adi stated.<\/p>\n

However, despite these issues, there is one thing that seems worth noting. Adi's sincere intention to participate in educating the nation's life even in remote areas seems to have touched the hearts of the children of SD Indong. Adi was not only touched by the experience above. Once, when he was sick, a student wrote a wish for Adi to get well soon. Moreover, some also brought fish, papaya, or vegetables from their parents' gardens. \"These things impressed and touched me,\" said Adi.\"\"<\/p>\n
