\"I can't stay home during the lockdown. I'd rather die standing than dying on my knees,\" said Dr. Syarif Hidayat, MT, the Vent-I team leader.<\/p>\n

The emergence of Vent-I stems from the challenges and threats posed by the SARS-Cov2 outbreak in Indonesia, in early 2020, where we were strongly encouraged to socially withdraw and minimize activities outside the home.<\/p>\n

One of the major challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic is the significant increase in COVID-19 cases while the logistical supplies needed to treat patients are limited. This is clearly catastrophic, especially for severe and critical patients who require immediate care.<\/p>\n

Therefore, to address this situation, a small team initially consisting of Dr. Syarief Hidayat, Jam'ah Halid, S.Si., M.Si., Ir. Hari Utomo, and Ir. Mipi Ananta Kusuma was formed on March 23, 2020, to create ventilators and received a positive response from various parties.<\/p>\n

The initial development of vent-I was initially funded by Rumah Amal Salman (RAS), a non-profit organization of the Salman Mosque of ITB, then many ITB lecturers, Professor Tatacipta Dirgantara, Dr. Sandro Mihrasi, Dr. Sri Raharno, Professor Trio Adiono and Adi Indrayanto, Ph.D as well as ITB alumni Ir. Hari Tjahjono decided to join the group.<\/p>\n

In addition, this project is also carried out by doctors from various fields of expertise, namely Dr. dr. Ike Sri Redjeki, Sp.AnKIC, KMN, M.Kes., Dr. Dadang Rukanta, Sp.OT., dr. Reza Widianto Sudjud, Sp.AnKIC, KAKV, M.Kes., Dr. Rully Herman Sitanggang, Sp.AnKIC, KAP, M.Kes to ensure the quality of the ventilator according to clinical standards.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the group involved multidisciplinary professionals from three institutions: the Bandung Institute of Technology, Padjajaran University, and the Salman Mosque, ITB's Founding Institute (YPM Salman ITB). In keeping with its vision of empowering mosques as centers of civilization, the Salman Mosque at ITB has been transformed into a laboratory where Ven-I's development takes place.<\/p>\n

Originally made from a plastic box and washing machine hose (Fig. 1), Vent-I has evolved into a high-quality product that meets stringent health requirements. The research and development team involved multidisciplinary student volunteers from various universities, including the Bandung Institute of Technology, the Indonesian University of Education, and Telkom University.<\/p>\n

One of the volunteers, Ashari (ITB 2016), said, \u201cI gained invaluable lessons and experience by conducting research at Vent-I because I met and worked with people from various academic backgrounds, both fellow students and teaching staff from renowned universities. I am also grateful to my parents for giving me their blessing to join this team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through a long process of product testing conducted by the Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Vent-I successfully passed the test on April 22, 2020. Despite the tedious task, the team's hard work, supported by proactive supervision from the authorities, was the key to Vent-I achieving the standards set by the government without compromising its quality.<\/p>\n

In addition, Vent-I has undergone two weeks of clinical trials at different hospitals, such as Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung Adventist Hospital, Santosa Hospital, Bandung Center, Al-Ihsan Regional General Hospital, Dustira Hospital Level II, Lung Hospital, Melinda 2 Hospital, Dr. Suyoto Rehabilitation Hospital, Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Cibabat Regional Hospital, and Wisma Atlet Hospital.<\/p>\n

Several important parameters were examined during the trial, such as the effect of Vent-I on the patient's blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2), pulse rate, and blood pressure. Reza explained that the clinical trial resulted in improvements in the patient's condition. This was related to increased oxygenation levels, resulting in improved organ function.<\/p>\n

Additional parameters were assessed, such as Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) stability, patient comfort level while using the machine, machine and electrical stability, and noise level. The clinical trial results were submitted to the Directorate General of Pharmaceutical Services and Medical Devices at the Indonesian Ministry of Health on May 13, 2020. Vent-I subsequently received a marketing authorization from the Indonesian Ministry of Health.<\/p>\n

In response, the Rumah Amal Salman (RAS) ITB fundraising team launched a large-scale campaign to secure funding. With a huge public response, the initial target of producing 100 ventilators increased to 1,000 ventilators. Supported by 2,048 donors, including individuals, communities, and corporations, they contributed even more, reaching Rp 12 billion.<\/p>\n

Production began in mid-May 2020 and lasted until July 2020. The production team had to work around the clock to produce thousands of Vent-I. Simultaneously, three companies, both state-owned and private, began industrial-scale production, assisted by students from various institutions, such as vocational schools, polytechnics, and universities.<\/p>\n

Concurrently, Vent-I ventilators were distributed to hospitals across Indonesia to receive feedback from healthcare workers, as feedback is crucial for improving Vent-I's quality. The team also organized webinars to educate healthcare workers about Vent-I.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Vent-I team set a public agenda to present its accountability report regarding Vent-I's production. This was held at a recreational event on July 24, 2020, titled \"Sharing Vent-I's Final Progress.\" Vent-I is a product of a collaboration between academia, business, community, government, and media (ABCGM) with the spirit of \"Innovation and Communal Work.\"<\/p>\n
