SEEI ITB Students Win 2nd Place Nationally in the Satria Data 2025 Big Data Challenge
Bandung, stei.itb.ac.id – Three students from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI) ITB won 2nd Place in the Big Data Challenge Division at the 2025 Statistika Ria dan Festival Sains Data (Satria Data), a national competition organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology in collaboration with Universitas Islam Indonesia. The Big Data Challenge is one of the flagship categories of Satria Data, challenging participants to solve real- world, data-driven problems through analysis, modeling, and scientific presentation. . . . ..
The SEEI ITB team, consisting of Winata Tristan (STI’22), Francesco Michael Kusuma (IF’22), and Maximilian Sulistiyo (IF’22), stood out due to their innovative approach to multimodal data processing. In the preliminary round, they developed an emotion classification system for 1,000 Instagram videos using an audio–text–based pipeline, leveraging the Whisper and IndoBERT models for emotion extraction and interpretation.

In the semifinal round, the team faced new challenges involving topic clustering, summarization, and data visualization for video content. They applied BERTopic with the HDBSCAN algorithm for text-embedding-based clustering and built an interactive web platform that enabled exploration of topic trends and engagement patterns similar to Google Trends. Through creativity and rigorous data analysis, the SEEI ITB team advanced to the national final held onsite at Universitas Islam Indonesia and secured second place overall.
This achievement demonstrates the excellence of SEEI ITB students in combining technical data science skills with technological innovation, while further strengthening ITB’s reputation in national data science competitions.
