This program is designed so that graduates can demonstrate ability and research skills independently in one or more branches covered in the above fields in original research. The results of this research should also add to the existing knowledge of electrical engineering and informatics; or reveal new problems, which according to the principles of engineering science, can be proven in a dissertation without a doubt.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. Graduates can become independent professional researchers in the Electrical & Informatics Engineering or related fields.
  2. Graduates can guide student research at all levels of higher education for those who choose a career in academia.
  3. Graduates can innovate products / technology in the workplace for those who work in the industrial sector.
  4. Graduates have leadership in research activities or in professional careers in their scientific fields.

Program Outcomes

  1. Critical Thinking Ability:
    1. Able to identify relevant scientific publications in the field of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, and be able to understand, evaluate and apply the information contained therein.
    2. Mastering in depth the latest theories, techniques, and tools in their field of specialization, and being able to creatively apply them in research activities.
  2. Ability to Find Research Problems:
    1. Fully understand the characteristics, development, phases, and ethical value of scientific research.
    2. Able to draw the essence and novelty of existing research results, and evaluate them critically within the scientific scope of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.
    3. Able to find new research problems whose solutions are within the scope of the knowledge they master.
  3. Ability to Run Research Programs:
    1. Able to make systematic and executable research plans within the available time and resources constraints.
    2. Understand and master research methodologies, techniques, and scientific approaches and are skilled in applying them to problem solving in the field of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, especially in their field of specialization.
    3. Able to improve existing techniques or develop new techniques in the process of solving complex research problems so that they can become part of the repertoire of science.
  4. Ability to Communicate Research Results:
    1. Able to participate actively in the academic community, communicate with peers in the scientific community, and the wider community related to the fields of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.
    2. Able to organize research results that have been carried out in the form of scientific reports and publish them in respected journals.
    3. Become one of the most respected experts in the field of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, especially for the branches of science related to the dissertation he has made.

Program Phases

The Curriculum of the Electrical and Informatics Doctoral Study Program is divided into 4 phases, namely:


Phase I or Qualification Phase

At this phase, doctoral program students are required to take a number of lectures, including the Qualification Examination course. Lectures are taken to partially fulfill the residence requirements and, if necessary, to prepare for a qualification exam. The new qualification exam can be done after students have registered and taken courses for a minimum of one semester. Students are declared to have completed this phase if they are declared to have passed the qualification exam. This first phase must be completed within a maximum of two semesters.

The components that are assessed in the Qualification Exam phase are as follows:

  • Issues discussed
  • Methodology in papers
  • The main results of the papers
  • The novelty element of the papers being reviewed
  • Further development
  • Mastery of basic science for the field to be studied


Phase II or the Proposal Preparation Phase

At this phase, students are required to compile a research proposal. Students are declared to have completed this phase if the proposal they compiled is approved by the supervisor team and is declared eligible as a doctoral research proposal by the assessment team. This second phase must be completed by students within a maximum period of four semesters from the time they start the doctoral program.
The components that are assessed in the Proposal Exam phase are as follows:

  • Mastery of basic supporting scienceAn understanding of the research problem
  • Methodology understanding
  • Knowledge of State of The Art research topics
  • Readiness to work independently
  • Working drive and motivation


Phase III or the Research Phase

At this stage, students conduct research and are required to regularly report their progress. At this stage also, students write their research results into a dissertation and in scientific papers to be published as international scientific publications. Students are declared to have completed this stage if:

  1. All courses, except for the Dissertation Exam courses, have passed,
  2. Students have met the requirements of scientific publications, and
  3. The dissertation prepared by students and approved by the supervisor team is declared worthy of being a doctoral dissertation by the assessment team.

The Research Phase of the Doctoral Program at STEI is divided into four stages of research progress as follows

  1. Research and Progress Seminar I
    1. Pre-requirements: Pass the Qualification Examination and Research Proposal
    2. Passing Requirements: Already can maintain a convincing method for solving research problems It is proven by a report that includes an analysis and an acceptable argument.
  2. Research and Progress Seminar II
    1. Pre-requirements: Pass the Research and Progress Seminar I
    2. Passing Requirements: Have explored the solution method proposed at the Progress Seminar I as evidenced by the initial research results.
  3. Research and Progress Seminar III
    1. Pre-requirements: Pass the Research and Progress Seminar II
    2. Passing Requirements: Have produced scientific contributions that can be published at international conferences in accordance with their fields, as evidenced in the form of a draft paper that has been approved by the Advisory Team.
  4. Research and Progress Seminar IV
    1. Pre-requisites: Pass the Research and Progress Seminar III and International Conference Papers received.
    2. Requirements for graduation: Have produced a complete scientific contribution that is suitable for writing in a dissertation and international journal draft that has been approved by the supervisor.

Phase IV or the Dissertation Exam Phase

At this stage, students take exams to defend their dissertation and perfect the writing of their dissertation. This fourth stage must be completed within a maximum period of 10 semesters.

Persyaratan tambahan dari STEI:
  1. TOEFL >=500 atau ELPT ITB >= 90
  2. TPA>=500

Khusus tahun 2020, persyaratan Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dan persyaratan TPA Bappenas tidak digunakan sebagai persyaratan seleksi mahasiswa baru dan dapat dipenuhi oleh mahasiswa sebelum lulus dari program Pascasarjana ITB.
